Pensees (Penguin Classics), by Blaise Pascal

Blaise Pascal, the precociously brilliant contemporary of Descartes, was a gifted mathematician and physicist, but it is his unfinished apologia for the Christian religion upon which his reputation now rests. The Penses is a collection of philosohical fragments, notes and essays in which Pascal explores the contradictions of human nature in pscyhological, social, metaphysical and - above all - theological terms. Mankind emerges from Pascal's analysis as a wretched and desolate creature within an impersonal universe, but who can be transformed through faith in God's grace.

With more than 1,700titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. About the Author
Blaise Pascal was born in Clermont in 1623, the son of a government official. During his short life he left his mark on mathematics, physics, religious controversy and literature. A convert to Jansenism, he engaged with gusto in a controversy with the Jesuits, which gave rise to his Lettres Provincialeson which, with the Penses, his literary fame chiefly rests. A remarkable stylist, he is regarded by many as the greatest of French prose artists. He died, after a long illness, in 1662.

Dr. A.J. Krailsheimer was born in 1921 and was Tutor in French at Christ Church, Oxford, from 1957 until his retirement in 1988. His publications are Studies in Self-Interest (1963), Rabelais and the Franciscans (1965), Three Conteurs of the Sixteenth Century (1966), Rabelais (1967), A. J. de Ranc, Abbot of La Trappe (1974), Pascal (1980), Conversion (1980), Letters of A. J. de Ranc (1984), Ranc and the Trappist Legacy (1985) and Correspondance de Ranc (1993). He has also translated Flaubert’s Bouvard and Pcuchet and Salammbo and Pascal’s The Provincial Letters for the Penguin Classics.

From AudioFile
After the death of French scientist/polemicist Blaise Pascal (1623-1662), his friends discovered among his papers a variety of jottings on religion. These they arranged and published as PENSES ("Thoughts"), which has come down to us as the liveliest, most eloquent apology of Christianity ever written. You wouldn't know it by the indifferent reading of William Sutherland. He reads with comprehension of individual lines and phrases, but with no sense of how they relate to one another. Read Pascal's Pensees.
By Craig G Cram
I always thought of Pascal as a great scientist, but as a somewhat dated Christian apologist. The general treatment of Pascal by both science and humanities is at best an unreflective nod to the importance of his scientific discoveries and a momentary and uncomfortable glance at his `other' writings.
The lack of serious consideration given to Pascal's `other' writings by philosophy and theology departments and their absence from science curriculums is indicative of major bias and ignorance. Why?
Pascal's science is embarassing to defenders of prevalent Darwinian atheistic science because of his zeal for the Christian faith. Pascal made some important discoveries but he "abandoned science for religion" and for that reason is tagged as an historical anachronism - he like many of the scientists of the 17th century were heavily tainted with `folk belief' and superstitions.
Pascal's Science and Faith is embarassing to those philosophers and theologians that cannot reconcile the two aspects of human Pensees - thoughts. They like to think of Pascal as an early `existentialist' like Kierkegaard who made a `leap' of faith against the atheistic dogmas of material science; but Pascal did not support their radical dichotomy of science versus faith.
Shunned on both sides for different reasons (for centuries!), Pascal is finally becoming more and more appreciated as someone who was `between' faith and science; a position becoming more fashionable.
All you have to do is read `The Pensees' to quickly see it as one of the most important, beautiful and penetrating books ever written. The Pensees (`Thoughts') are a long series of fragments on the the human situation, Jesus Christ, God, revelation, Infinity and finitude. But it is the little pieces that you find, like lost treasures, that ring through to your very being that sets Pascal's Pensees apart as a book for living and reflecting and not merely analyzing.
"We sail over a vast expanse, ever uncertain, ever adrift, carried to and fro. To whatever point we think to fix and fasten ourselves it shifts and leaves us; and if we pursue it it escapes our grasp, slips away, fleeing in eternal flight - Man's condition: inconstancy, ennui, unrest."
"The last step that Reason takes is to recognize that there is an infinity of things that lie beyond it. Reason is a poor thing indeed if it does not succed in knowing that."

Pascal is hard to pigeonhole
By J. F Foster
This book, representing Pascal's 'pensees', or thoughts, contains many provocative views that have managed to arouse critics from many different perspectives. And while there are several strains of Pascal's thought that I considerably dissent from, it can hardly be denied that in many ways, Pascal's insights into human character as it relates to the divine are not easily dismissed, at least intellectually.
Because this work is a collection of thoughts rather than a systematic presentation, which is what Pascal ultimately had in mind but his illness and subsequent death prevented, the reader will likely find Pascal to be quite quotable. There are quite a few 'one liners' in here that are profound to the point of being humorous when one thinks about how insightful his thoughts are. And Pascal, in arguing in favor of the truth of Christianity, makes a very big investment in fulfilled prophecy and the history of the Jews that readers should find interesting. His 8 page discourse on indifference at the beginning of the second section is among the best 8 pages I've ever read and have succeeded in providing a noticeable amount of discomfort for atheists for three centuries now.
The portion of Pensees that is the most well known is Pascal's wager argument early in the second section. Personally, this argument, while interesting, is not the most compelling argument he makes and I consider it a shame that the wager argument has really overshadowed what I believe to be Pascal's most provocative argument in favor of the Christian religion - his anthropological argument. While not stated in this manner, section 1 of Pensees spends considerable time developing the notion that the extreme paradox of humanity (as Pascal sees it) of both immense greatness and horrible evil demand an explanation. How can man be both, and what worldview best explains this clear reality? These are the questions that Pascal presents, and he argues that only the Biblical narrative of man from creation forward provides an intelligent framework upon which to explain the human condition adequately. It is a very provocative argument that a number of thoughtful theologians from Groothuis to McKenzie have opined upon quite recently, and it is an argument that deserves extensive thought not just about the Christian religion, but about the very nature of man and whether Pascal's grasp of it is correct or not. I have found that one can take the sketches of the argument put forward by Pascal here and get into some very deep anthropological water that is healthy, even if one ultimately takes issue with Pascal's paradox.
Being a Jansenist, Pascal was not as willing as mainstream Roman Catholicism to rely on human reason, believing that man's 'wretchedness' calls such reason into question. As such, the reader will notice that Pascal tends to employ a general polemic against reason, even though he clearly refutes the complete abandonment of reason. But as part of this general polemic, he clearly distrusts natural theology as well as the rationalizations of the philosophers (which is kind of ironic), believing that philosophical rationalizing is ultimately an impediment to faith. It is in these basic areas (and a few others) which I respectfully dissent from Pascal in varying degrees. Pascal intends here to walk a fine line between what he believed to be the logical absurdity of faith in complete contradiction to reason, but also of the bankruptcy as he saw it of reason alone becoming the basis for our faith. In my own reading of the book, my view is that Pascal devoted more energy to dealing with the latter concern than the former.
A highly provocative book that has, and will continue to arouse thought and contemplation at the deepest levels.

Rough but insightful.
By Wesley L. Janssen
Pascal, the brilliant mathematician, physicist, and engineer, presents in his posthumously titled Pensees, his philosophy of religion and a paradox rich and challenging defense of Christian faith. Says Pascal, "Knowledge has two extremes which meet; one is the pure natural ignorance of every man at birth, the other is the extreme reached by great minds who run through the whole range of human knowledge, only to find that they know nothing... but it is a wise ignorance which knows itself. Those who stand half-way... pretend to understand everything... they get everything wrong."
The book is a collection of unfinished writings; arguments and ideas which he had scribbled, intending to then develop and elaborate. As such, the text is disjointed and even mysterious; statements are abrupt, incomplete, dogmatic. Yet, out of respect for the intellectual accomplishments of the great French mathematician, these notes were published essentially as he had left them. They contain many gems; profound statements which stand like islands in a sea of sometimes jumbled thoughts.
Pascal's themes are: the nature of human knowledge, the affliction of pride, the blindness and tyranny of self, the boundaries of reason, the hiddenness of God, and his own argument for "wagering" not only on God, but on the Christian faith. Two things are obvious; (1.) the arguments are not in the form in which Pascal intended to offer them, therefore, (2.) this is not a definitive apologetic. However, Pascal's arguments are rather unique and as such they are interesting even in their [often] crude form. Read this book in conjunction with the writings of C.S. Lewis, Augustine, or Sundar Singh.

A quick, worthwhile read
By Brian
Johnstone offer here a good introduction to the importance, nature, and methodology of urban ministry, making his case well without delving too deeply for such an introductory work.

Johnstone wisely divided the book into two sections: a three-chapter introduction meant to focus the reader's understanding of cities, followed by an eight-chapter manual recommending specific actions for churches, ministries, and individuals to take. Scripture verses are well chosen for emphasizing that God loves cities and the people within them, too. His conclusion ably unifies the whole.

One of the foremost strengths of the work is its balance. He balances generalizations with specific details well and provides enough citations and references without cluttering a work meant to be accessible. His chapters on suggested actions show a balance of meeting individual and immediate needs with fixing systemic and lasting problems. He addresses the need for wisdom and deliberation in offering help without creating dependencies or enabling charlatans. He discusses both international and local work and emphasizes the necessity of both. Several times, he addresses oft-cherished Bible quotations in context, clarifying that they are more than the tame little comforts some try to make them.

For me, the book was well-aimed. I have lived in a rural area my whole life but am about to move to a city of 4 million people on another continent; I often wonder if the adjustment to city life will be more difficult than that to living across an ocean. This book is a great help in directing my thinking about the changes and challenges to come.

The book offered me several surprises, including that we have only recently crossed from a majority-rural world population to a majority-urban one. I would have thought that had occurred decades earlier than the 2007 or 2008 that Johnstone's referenced statisticians cite. Likewise, I would not have guessed that the urban population was still only 3 percent as recently as 1800, nor that the world population is expected to be 90 percent urban by the end of this century. By 2050, a few cities that receive little attention in the West will be three times the size of New York City.

This book would serve well for pastors, church leaders, members, and aid workers trying to understand new opportunities and challenges. It would also make an excellent companion to such widely read works as Steve Corbett's /When Helping Hurts/ for a wider study. I highly recommend it and thank the fellow believer who recommended it to me.

Fantastic quick overview of the need and vision of church planting and effective ministry in urban contexts. This is a quick read but a necessity for every pastor, seminary professor and student, missiologist, and missio-focused lay person and church.

A 21st Century Approach to Urban Ministry/Missions (Christian)
By Bob Allen
The thing I really liked about this book was the 8-part urban strategy. Johnstone doesn't lay out details but discusses a series of facets that he says must be incorporated into any strategy for a 21st century urban setting —and I think he's right on target.

Whoever Tells the Best Story Wins: How to Use Your Own Stories to Communicate with Power and Impact, by Annette Simmons

Story telling is a powerful communications tool that is becoming more and more recognized in the business community. These stories are not the usual speech openers or ice breakers, but stories that will influence others to trust the storyteller and shape decisions and actions that are important to both individuals and organizations. As the author explains, we've been conditioned to believe that business communication should be clear, rational, objective, with no place for emotion or subjective thinking. Not true. The most powerful, persuasive communication has a human element: "Communication can't feel genuine without the distinctive personality of a human being to provide context. You need to show up when you communicate - the real you, not the idealized you.The missing ingredient in most failed communication is humanity. This is an easy fix. In order to blend humanity into every communication you send, all you have to do is tell more stories and bingo - you just showed up." This book teaches readers how to tell six kinds of stories. Part 1 explains how to shift from normal "business thinking" to story thinking. Part 2 describes the six types of story, and walks readers through the process of finding their own inspiring stories. Part 3 outlines five practical principles that maximize story as a tool to understand as well as persuade. Readers can also make journal entries to capture and develop story ideas. The book is - naturally - full of inspiring stories (some very funny). The style is lively and personal, yet eloquent and sophisticated.

From the Inside Flap

Most of us have been conditioned to believe that business communication must be clear, rational, and objective, with no place for emotion or subjective thinking. But great communicators know that the best way to inspire, motivate, and persuade others is to infuse a human element into discussions through the simple telling of stories.

Stories help people feel acknowledged, connected, and less alone. Your stories help them feel more alive. To realize the power of stories is both an incredible opportunity and an awesome responsibility. Filled with enlightening anecdotes and practical guidance, Whoever Tells the Best Story Wins helps you to understand and use that power. You will be able to craft your own personal experiences into stories that will build consensus, win others over to your point of view, and enable better group decision making.

The book gives you a process for finding, developing, and using your own stories effectively. You'll learn how to craft specific, intentional messages that get your ideas across using universal story structures, including:

Who-I-Am Stories—What qualities earn you the right to influence someone? People need to know who you are before they can trust you, so get personal. Reveal who you are, as a person, by telling a story about a time, place, or event that reveals that you have the qualities your audience seeks.

Teaching Stories—Certain lessons are best learned from experience—some of them over and over again during a lifetime. Telling a story that creates a shared experience will change behavior much better than offering advice.

Vision Stories—The prospect of a worthy, exciting future can help to reframe present difficulties as "worth it," turning seemingly huge obstacles into small irritants on the path to a worthwhile goal.

Values-in-Action Stories—Values are subjective. To some, integrity means doing what their boss tells them to do. To others, it means saying no, even if it costs them their job. If you want to encourage a value, tell a story that illustrates in action what that value means in action.

I-Know-What-You-Are-Thinking Stories—Sometimes, people have already made up their mind about the ideas you're trying to get across. It is a valuable trust-building surprise for you to share their secret suspicions in a story that first validates and then dispels their objections without sounding defensive.

People float in an ocean of data and disconnected facts that can often overwhelm them with choices. In this ocean of choice, a meaningful story can feel like a life preserver that tethers us to something safe and important—at the very least, to a trace of humanity that proves there is a "you" communicating with them, whether the "you" is yourself or an organization you represent. This important book helps you lay the groundwork for using story as a credible tool to connect with your audience, and create a meaning more powerful than mere facts could ever do.

Annette Simmons is president of Group Process Consulting, whose clients include NASA, the IRS, and Microsoft. She has been featured on CNBC’s Power Lunch and NPR’s Market Watch, and has been quoted in Fortune, The Washington Post, and other publications. She is the author of several books, including The Story Factor. She lives in Greensboro, North Carolina.

From the Back Cover

The missing ingredient in most failed communication is humanity. Yet the sense of human presence in communication is frequently elbowed out by dry "criteria" that obscures the real goal: establishing a true connection with your audience. Whoever Tells the Best Story Wins shows you how to use your own personal stories to get your ideas across and establish the kind of shared experience that will result in agreement. By adding an element of subjective thinking to your repertoire, you'll discover how to:

• gain people's trust • command attention • shift from everyday thinking into story thinking • amplify the points you're trying to make • manage the different interpretations that might be drawn from your objective data • help shape group decisions and actions • tell the six fundamental types of story

Filled with enlightening anecdotes, this practical guide gives you the tools you need to persuade, inspire, and influence others simply by doing something you already do every day: opening yourself up to the power of story.

"It's not as hard as you think! Annette Simmons lays out the storytelling agenda in clear, simple steps. You can (and you must) tell a story if you expect to succeed as a marketer. This book ought to help."

—Seth Godin, author, All Marketers Are Liars

"Once upon a time, story was banished from business. Then Annette Simmons came along to show us the error of our ways. This book is a smart, practical guide to tapping the power of narrative to improve your business and your life."

-- Daniel H. Pink, author of A Whole New Mind

"Storytelling is a critical leadership skill, but one that even the most talented managers neglect. In Whoever Tells the Best Story Wins, Annette Simmons tells us why we must all learn to tell a good story, and guides us through simple steps to master this important craft. If you seek to communicate with greater impact and conviction, this book is for you."

—Herminia Ibarra, The INSEAD Chaired Professor of Organizational Behavior

Why Read a Second Book by Annette Simmons?
By Terry MacDonald
I just reviewed The Story Factor, and now I will share with you why Whoever Tells the Best Story Wins is another fabulous guide to building strong leadership through stories. The Story Factor told us the "what" and "why." This book covers that briefly in Part One and goes on in Part Two to tell us "how" and "where." It's a real challenge to find the stories worth sharing and tell them at the right time. Simmons shares from experience the six types of stories and provides a series of interactive exercises to help you! find and develop these stories.

As a fairly right-brain thinker already, I find her book affirming that my instincts in presenting ideas to others are on track. I do think this book will open a whole new world of ideas of people who are more linear and fact-based. I believe that stories are amazing conduits of information that channel deeply into the listener - when they are true at heart. It's a common message when you read through motivational books that you have to have faith in yourself, in your message, and in the moment. A book that really drove that home to me was "Success Secrets of the Motivational Superstars: America's Greatest Speakers Reveal Their Secrets."

So, why should you read a second book by Annette Simmons? Because she is telling the story of stories and making a serious impact on how people communicate today. Read about it today!

Corporate Videos Benefit from Stories
By Thomas R. Clifford
"This book is actually designed to help you pay more attention to the stories you tell."

Well said, Annette! (from page 22.)

So...

Are you paying attention to what stories are you telling?

Are you paying attention to what stories your company is telling?

As a filmmaker, I am passionate about telling stories from remarkable organizations. Personal stories is the DNA for corporate videos; it's the lifeblood.

We've all seen boring videos from organizations. Have you ever considered why they are boring?

Corporate videos are often boring because they lack a personal story with any emotion.

If you are looking to put emotion back into your life, your work or your presentations, Annette Simmons's new book is a fresh look on an ancient tool.

This new book on storytelling is remarkable for three reasons:

1. It's simple but extremely effective.
Annette's style and approach creates opportunities for anyone to begin re-framing their lives, their work and their future with new stories to tell.

2. It's thought-provoking.
If you haven't given too much thought as to who you are and why you are here, Annette will guide you step-by-step to discovering your personal story.

3. It works. Period.
Our brains are hard-wired for stories so why not consciously learn how to discover, tell and share stories that matter? Annette breaks the code for storytelling so you can implement the results right away.

I have shared "Whoever Tells the Best Story Wins" in meetings and the energy of the conversation instantly changes...everyone wants to chime in and share a story! Now, everyone has a new "frame" in which to proceed.

It's no wonder, then, it has become one of my favorite storytelling references.

Thanks, Annette, for a truly inspiring piece of work!

Companions of the Night, by Vivian Vande Velde

Kerry's got a tough night ahead of her. What begins as a simple lost-and-found trip to the Laundromat turns into a nightmarish odyssey of murder, vampires, and--quite possibly--true love. Vivian Vande Velde puts a terrifying spin on what should be a typical night in a small town.

Amazon.com Review
The romantic horror genre reaches a new level of complexity in this novel, which manages to be simultaneously thought-provoking and blood-curdling. Kerry becomes the unwitting accomplice of an attractive, mysterious boy on the run, only to discover that he is a vampire. Can she trust her feelings for someone so alien to her? Or has she been "seduced by the glamour of evil"? An ALA Best Book for Young Adults, this was called "a tingly thriller" by Horn Book

From School Library Journal
Grade 6-10?Kerry Nowicki, 16, never dreamed that vampires lived in her little town of Brockport, New York, let alone that she would become involved with a handsome one named Ethan. When she makes a late-night trip back to the laundromat to retrieve her little brother's stuffed bear, she interrupts the murderous plans of a vigilante committee that claims Ethan is one of the undead. Kerry tries to help him, so they assume that she is a vampire, too. When the two young people escape, Kerry's brother and father are kidnapped in retaliation, and a complicated game of cat-and-mouse follows. During the often harrowing experiences that follow, Kerry proves to be an intelligent, level-headed young woman. She recognizes the danger of her attraction to Ethan, but knows that she must trust him to help find her family. Ethan maintains the cunning and duplicity that readers might expect from a vampire. The plot is lively and intriguing, with an unexpected twist at the end. Readers might be tempted to compare this novel to Annette Curtis Klause's The Silver Kiss (Delacorte, 1990), since many of the elements are similar. But the heroine of that story acts from a different motivation, making the books much different in terms of plot, theme, and tone. Companions of the Night should attract a loyal following of its own.?Marilyn Makowski, Greenwood High School, SC
Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
Gr. 7^-10. In a compelling story that has more in common with The Silver Kiss (1990), by Annette Curtis Klause, than it does with Hahn's recent Look for Me by Moonlight , 16-year-old Kerry Nowicki finds herself caught up in a life-and-death chase after she helps an injured young man escape from some men who claim that he is a vampire. And that, it turns out, is exactly what he is. Can she trust Ethan Byrne not to kill her or turn her into a vampire as they search for the man who assumes she, too, is a vampire and has kidnapped her father and little brother? Readers will want to believe in Ethan's honesty as much as Kerry wants to, and Vande Velde carefully maintains the suspense by allowing Ethan to remain an enigma until the end. Kerry also is believable as she alternates between fear and feistiness because her only alternative is to cooperate with Ethan if she hopes to find her family. Full of tension and familiar vampire lore--and with a touch of romance--this should find a wide YA audience. Sally Estes

I Wish I Could Give It More Stars!
By M. Smitherman
I've just recently gotten into vampires, and I found Companions of the Night while browsing through amazon.com. Intrigued, I read some of the reviews, and knew that I had to read this book!
It all begins when Kerry's little brother Ian asks her to go to the laundromat to get Footy, his stuffed koala bear, which he'd left there earlier that day. Kerry is reluctant to go, since it's 11:00 at night, she has a test the next day on a book she hasn't finished, and she doesn't have her driver's license yet. But she can't resist her little brother's pleas, so she goes anyway. The action starts when a group of men burst into the laundromat while Kerry is there, dragging a tied-up and bloodied young man who they believe is a vampire. Kerry, knowing there is no such thing as vampires, helps the young man escape.
But the next day when Kerry's dad doesn't pick her up from work, she's worried that it has something to do with the events of last night. But then the young man, Ethan, shows up to give her a ride home... where she discovers that her dad and brother have been kidnapped by a crazed vampire hunter. Having run out of options, Kerry asks Ethan for help in finding her family--and learns that vampires do exist, and Ethan is one of them. Can she trust him to help her rescue her family, or is he using her to get at the vampire hunter? She doesn't know who to trust, or even whether she'll live through the night.
Companions of the Night is filled to the brim with action, suspense, romance, and even a little humor. It instantly became a favorite, and I am looking forward to buying it and reading it again and again. If you like vampires, romance, and a superb hard-to-put-down story, this book is just the thing for you.

Opinion of a College Student
By Ashley Pittman
While reading through the reviews of for this book, I've come across quite a few really negative ones. The main reasons seem to be because of the simplistic writing and the lack of concrete vampire details. I strongly disagree with those reviews and will have to add my vote to the much greater number saying what a wonderful book this is. I first read this book six years ago when I was 14, and loved it. Just recently I came across it again, and my love has become, if possible, greater. After reading quite a few Anne Rice books since this one, I think I prefer the simple writing displayed here to that of Anne Rice. Don't get me wrong, I love Anne Rice's books passionately, but I don't much like being interrupted at the climax of the story for details of a rain forest for five pages. The writing in CotN is easy to read, but the author did not sacrifice wonderful writing for the simplicity presented. The imagery is still strong, and her characters are brilliantly portrayed. That is in fact probably what I love most about the book: the characters. The plot is interesting, and the dialog is realistic and witty. As for the lack of vampire details; that is part of what gives the book its edge. As the reader you're learning about this world of vampires along with the main character and are forced to keep guessing just like her. The ending does leave a little to be desired, but its realistic and rewarding in its own right.

Basically, whether you're 14 or 20, if you like vampires and are interested in a quick and interesting read, I highly recommend this book.

Not Your Ordinary Vampire Tale
By Jarrod T Thompson
Several months ago I began reading Cirque Du Freak and got hooked on the vampire genre.

Companions of the night is not your ordinary vampire tale. The mystery of whether Ethan is or is not a vampire at the beginning of the book makes it intriguing. What really makes the novel interesting is that it is hard to tell who Ethan really is, how old Ethan really is, and whether or not he is on Kerry's side, or if she might become a vampire, or half-vampire by the end of the book.

Vivian Vande Velde does a good job keeping the book interesting from start to finish. There are always questions of "what if" all the way through the novel. I always like the different ways authors of these books decide to state what is "real" and fake for vampires and their kind. Vande Velde does this too and it makes you think for the briefest moment that maybe these vampires are for real.

The suspense is good up until the end. Kerry's dreamlike state and curiosity and passsion toward the vampire race makes the end worthwhile. I enjoyed this novel and look to read the other works of Vivian Vande Velde. Good book!
