She lives in Greenville, North Carolina, with her husband and four children.

For football fans and Super Bowl spectacle lovers alike

At 344 pages, I'd say just over half of the book dives into all of the Super Bowl games (with images and details), key players and coaches. That's for my husband. Then it gets into what I like even more: what makes the Super Bowl special for people who like football all right, but are just as into the commercials, halftime, and other fun stuff surrounding the game. There are so many beautiful photos and illustrations that make this book more interesting to read, or even just glance through. There are fun facts and a lot to break up all the pages. The hardcover is a nice texture, too, like a football. Gold foil is a nice touch! Overall, a nice addition to the coffee table!

Synonymous with the 1980s downtown New York art scene and embraced by popular culture for his peppy line drawings of dancing figures, Keith Haring (1958–90) blended a cheery optimism and an active sense of humor with a populist, activist commitment in his work. Arriving in New York in 1978 to study at the School of Visual Arts, he experimented with performance, video, installation and collage, and found himself increasingly involved in an alternative art community that showed its work in the streets and nightclubs; Haring himself would find a uniquely effective platform for his drawings in the unused advertising panels scattered throughout the subway system.

Manhattan Penis Drawings for Ken Hicks collects one singular series of Haring’s drawings: a series of cartoonish penises inspired by the city of Manhattan, made in the late 1970s. Sometimes the inspiration is quite literal, as in a drawing of the Twin Towers reimagined as two erect penises. Other times, the relation is more atmospheric, as in the drawing of a frenzied mass of penises evoking the hustle and bustle of the city but also recalling the dynamism of Futurist painting, captioned "Drawing penises in front of The Museum of Modern Art."

About the Author

Charlotte Perkins Gilman (1860–1935) was the author of novels, short stories, poems, and works of nonfiction. She is best known for “The Yellow Wallpaper” (1892), Women and Economics (1898), and the novel Herland (1915).
Dana Seitler is Assistant Professor of Literary Theory and Cultural Studies at Wayne State University.

Recommended read, it's always interesting to see where Gilman ...

This is a fairly quick read of a book, longer than Gilman's usual short story, but not something that would take weeks to read either. This particular copy is a bit different than most books. This one is a reprint of a "historic book" which in this case seems to mean the original page numbers happen to be in the middle of paragraphs, sentences and sometimes even words. It's a bit distracting at first, but you get used to it after a page or two. Each page is laid out in three columns, and the whole thing is the size of a composition notebook, though not nearly as thick. If that layout would distract you, there are other printings available in "regular" paperback size, some are even anthologies. Recommended read, it's always interesting to see where Gilman went with her various works.

Should be studied more often

_The Crux_ isn't "great literature" but it is well worth reading for the insight into Charlotte Perkins Gilman's thinking about sexuality, gender, and health. In this text, you can trace some of the elements of her belief in eugenics, intertangled with her conviction that women should have satisfying careers and independent lives. In other words, as with so many of Gilman's contemporaries, the ideas that we think of as "progressive" and "reactionary" were, in this era, mutually constitutive. _The Crux_ makes for fascinating reading and lively discussion.
