Great Investment for your life!

I received this book two days ago, and am about half way through. I had NO experience with pivot tables this book has been a life saver. This book has taught me not only how to do pivot tables with excel hands on examples (that you download at Mr. Excel website) but has also taught me how to think critically, why is this important to do, or why does this need to go here and not there. This hands on and theory approach is the best way of learning new concepts. I truly believe that a 10 year old could learn how to do pivot tables with this book it is that well written. The examples are great with data cleaning all the way to VBA programing. This book I would recommend without doubt if you are in need or want to learn pivot tables. I feel confident that in less than 2 days that I will put it on a resume as a technical skill. Best $30 I have ever spent and I would consider this a great investment for your life!

This is a really thorough description and analysis of Excel pivot tables and charts, and the use of them to analyze data. Well written with plenty of practical examples of their use.

Just browsing it will equip you with a broader knowledge of the wide applicability of this powerful tool. You can often eliminate dozens of lines of VBA code with their use.

I learned a great deal from just the first few days of quick reads of this book. Highly recommended.

Great for fully understanding Pivot Tables

I am a long term Excel user, (after many years using Lotus 123 and visicalc before that). I realized I needed to fully understand what I could do with Pivot Tables and how to make full use of the their features. This was the perfect companion for me while I was taking on a new complex excel project. While I had a rudimentary understanding of Pivots, this provided me with the extra knowledge to take my skills to the next level. Excel continues to add new features that continue our need to stay current, this worked for me. I am not sure how this book would be for a novice or beginning excel user, but if you really need to understand the power of Pivot Tables -- it is great.

A must read. One of the best for true RE investors

I have been investing in RE for over 20 years and I have read a lot of books. This one is the best so far and I would say it is a must read.

This book is not a Carlton Sheets (et al) get rich quick balogna book. This is a book for serious RE investors.

If you want to flip properties, this book is not for you. If you want to buy and hold properties, this is by far the best book I have ever read.

The most value of this book is how to properly assess value of a property. Assessing the value of a property is probably the most difficult thing. Not only does he teach you how to do this, he teaches you how to see through the sellers inflated balance sheets and possible misleading Realtor statements.

Also of tremendous value is how to properly manage properties for maximum cashflow. I had no idea I had so much to learn in this area.

What more can I say? Just get the book. I got the audio book and I listened to it at least 4 times.

Finally a "How To" Book on Investing!

My expectations were low at first. I've heard so many people bashing GURUs on the subject of investing in RE and thought I'd hear the same advice. I couldn't have been more WRONG!

Ken McElroy, takes the time to explain all the tools you will need in order to be successful in RE investing. The thing I found most helpful is the end of the chapter To Do List. Have you ever read a chapter and moved on to the next chapter without an action plan...Not in this book!

McElroy talks about the things that made him a success as well as a recommended path for you to be successful. He doesn't cover flipping properties. When he does mention Flipping Properties, he advises against it.

I would recommend this book to the beginner and intermediate investor. For 2 reasons, this book will move you into the doing stage of your investing career with its action plan. Secondly, there is no fluff here. He gives you fact after fact.

Breaking the myths

Here's my book review on this real estate book.

PROS:

This book addresses two main myths that people have about real estate.

1. One is, since you don't have that much money, you shouldn't invest in real estate. Though this book doesn't cover how to finance your investments, it does name a few examples of how a few people who didn't have money managed to invest in real estate to make their millions.

2. The second myth is how big deals are too risky so don't go after them. The book gives an example of other people doing it.

The fact of the matter is, if you don't have much money, you'll either need to get some capital by borrowing or partnering. And when you face big deals, the risks are heavier but also the rewards are multiplied.

CONS:

1. In the end, this book covers real estate pros (but hardly any cons). So it is motivating but unbalanced. Care and risk management should always be part of your investment strategies.

Lack of explanations leave students wondering

After completing upper level mechanics courses as a physics major and then switching to engineering I thought that the lower level mechanics courses should be relatively easy, especially statics. What I had not realized was that they are hard if you do not have a good textbook to learn from. As I took the course which at one time was taught by this author, I found the textbook to be of absolutely no help other than outlining the topics in statics. The lack of explanation was astounding as I was trying to read it. A brief verbal discription was given for each topic and a relatively easy problem was used for example problems. This left many questions and no place to look for answers. A briefly mentioned topic does no good for someone trying to learn. If topics are not discussed thoroughly and difficult examples are not shown with indepth analysis, it is very hard to learn. This might have been done on purpose to avoid confusing the student, but it should also be realized that this is college and we are adults, and if something is explained fully it will be less confusing and leave fewer gaps than a partial explanation. The student should be challenged by the material and not the device used to convey it. I would have been lost in the course if not for my physics background and my physics textbooks.

not a book for starters

this should not be a sophmore book. it has really bad explanations, and Mr Shames makes reald hard lots of topics that are reaaly easy. i liked the proposed exercises, they are really challenging, but they require a high level of algebra, calculus, analytic geometry, etc... to solve them, that is why i think this is not the right book to start with statics. my sugestion if you have bad physics background is to get the beer and jhonston or the meriam and kraige statics books, once you understand everything go to the shames book. it really has great exercises

Shames is a god-king of engineering

Shames has a calculus based view of mechanics. Others use a simplistic algebraic approach...Shames illuminates the only way mechanics should be taught. It is a treat, but not for the mathematically challenged.

About the Author

Claudia Hunter Johnson is a writer/director whose feature documentary The Other Side of Silence: The Untold Story of Ruby McCollum won Best Florida Documentary Film at the 2012 Ft. Lauderdale International Film Festival and the Gold Jury Prize at the 2013 Social Justice Film Festival. She recently completed (with Matt Stevens) the feature screenplay Ruby, based on her documentary. A nationally recognized advocate for free speech, she won the inaugural P.E.N./Newman’s Own First Amendment Award, and her critically acclaimed memoir Stifled Laughter: One Woman’s Story About Fighting Censorship was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. She is a member of the founding faculty at the Florida State University College of Motion Picture Arts where she continues to teach screenwriting courses.

Claudia H Johnson's insight of the connect-disconnect pattern in storytelling came first to my attention in the early editions of Janet Burroway's classic textbooks Writing Fiction: A Guide to Narrative Craft and the more recent Imaginative Writing: The Elements of Craft (See my detailed reviews of the current editions of both books on amazon.)

In "Writing Fiction," 1994 edition, Burroway wrote: "I'm indebted to dramatist Claudia Johnson's crucial insight...whereas the hierarchical or vertical nature of narrative, the power struggle, has long been acknowledged, there also appears in all narrative a horizontal pattern of connection and disconnection between characters, which is the main source of its emotional effect."

As organizer of our writing group CreativeWritersBerkeley (now a meetup), I have long been using the earlier editions of Claudia Johnson's screenwriting as well as Burroway's fiction-craft books as the major texts.

Introducing CRAFTING SHORT SCREENPLAYS THAT CONNECT, fourth edition, Johnson describes Burroway's immediate appreciation of her insight when she went to see her: "This is big - the other half of Aristotle" (p xxiv). Both are professors at Florida State University. Johnson's book was first published in 2000. It received considerable acclaim.

On the fourth edition's jacket, Linda Seger, author of several books on screenwriting, notes: "Claudia Johnson leads the reader through the process of writing the short film, along the way illuminating something much bigger - how to write great drama in any form." Burroway has been right all along in her fiction-writing textbooks.

The new edition expands expository chapters, adds several short films, presents ten screenplays by her students, and provides access to their films at the companion website. Several of these plays won multiple awards including the Student-Emmy Awards.

Here are some of the highlights of the four parts of the nearly 400-page book.

PART I, Preparing to Write the Short Screenplay, four brief chapters.

On page 11, appears an excellent exercise "Connecting to Self" that asks the reader to write down top five answers to each of the ten questions:

"What I Love;
What I Hate;
What I Fear;
What I Believe;
What I Value;
What I Want;
What I Know About;
People Who Made a Difference in My Life;
Discoveries That Made a Difference in My Life;
Decisions That Made Difference in My Life"

The above exercise can open the path to writing from the heart. It's similar to the Step 1 exercise "Write Something That May Change Your Life" in John Truby's highly regarded The Anatomy of Story: 22 Steps to Becoming a Master Storyteller . (See my detailed review on amazon.) Truby exhorts, "Do some self-exploration, something most writers, incredibly enough, never do."

PART II, Aspects of the Craft, five chapters.

The fifth chapter, Story and Screenplay, claims "Everything You Need to Know You Can Learn" from one scene in Charlie Chaplin's "City Lights." As a fan of Charlie Chaplin geAfter reading Johnson's masterly four-page analysis of this scene and as a fan of Chaplin's genius and after reading Johnson's 4-page detailed analysis of the scene, I agree with her: "You can't learn everything you need to know, but you can get pretty close if you pay close attention" to it (p 53).

6. The chapter, Character, cites excerpts from the works of Charles Dickens's "A Christmas Carol," William Goldman's "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," George Lucas's "American Graffiti," Ray Bradbury's "Zen in the Art of Writing," Woody Allen's "Hannah and Her Sisters" as well as several of her students' works.

7. The chapter, Structure, questions Syd Field's paradigm of a rigid three-act structure and plot points in favor of William Goldman's advice of flexibility: "The proper structure should be for the particular script you are writing." Highly instructional in this chapter is the description of one of Johnson's students, Brian Gutierrez Arramayo's struggle. He tried to adhere to the Field paradigm in the first fourteen drafts of his screenplay "Intercambio." In the fifteenth draft, observes Johnson, "Getting back to the heart of the story - - and getting in touch with his own heart - - gave Brian the confidence he needed to replace his longer, expositional, Paradigm-perfect Act One attempts with a brief opening scene that deftly sets up Cristina's circumstances, want, and intention" (p 81).

8. The chapter, Dialogue, includes effective and entertaining examples from screenplays such as Susannah Grant's "Erin Brokovich," Robert Benton's "Kramer vs Kramer," and Woody Allen & Marshall Brickaman's "Annie Hall."

PART III, Five (Not So) Easy Screenplays are exercises.

Each chapter includes guidelines to do the exercise and presents examples from classic as well as students' screenplays.

9. The chapter, The Discovery, exercise: "Write a three-page screenplay about a character making a discovery that makes a difference to the character" (p 113).

10. The Decision, exercise: "Write a three-to-five page screenplay about a character making a decision that makes a difference to the character" (p 123).

11. The Boxing Match, exercise: "Write a five-page screenplay about a character (A) who wants something that a second character (B) does not want to give" (p 133)

12. The Improbable Connection, exercise: "Write a seven-page screenplay about two characters who initially feel no connection whatsoever -- a connection between them is highly improbable -- but by the end of the screenplay they have come to feel a authentic connection" (p 145).

13. The Long Short Screenplay, exercise: "Write the best ten-page (or shorter) screenplay you can -- using the techniques you have learned to tell a good story that makes us connect -- a pattern of human change that makes a difference to your main character. And to us" (p 153).

Great resource for teachers and students

If you're looking for a book to help teach screenwriting, this could be your best choice. The writing style is clear and lively, full of illuminating anecdotes and references to familiar films. The linear structure of the book and the way it goes from simple to more complex exercises makes it suitable for teaching (or teaching yourself) on a short 'toe-dipping' course or for a much longer period. I teach Creative Writing in a sixth form college and my group have enjoyed the exercises and analysing the example screenplays. After looking through several texts of this type I went for this one, perhaps because the author is a teacher herself and so knows how to break things down and build them up - something missing from many other introductions to screenwriting. Highly recommended.
