i love srini! this book is outstanding. tons of my favorite stickers were in here.

my only disappointment was that these are paper stickers. i incorrectly assumed that these would be vinyl stickers like what are sold on the website.

Kid sister approved!

I am so proud of Srini -- this book so far is his crowning achievement. As an Indian kid, it took a lot of nerves for him to take the path he's chosen, or I should say, blaze a trail. As my mom likes to say, he was reading at 2, skipped the second grade, had 15 years of classical violin training and went to Stanford -- only to study Sociology and play in punk rock bands! All you misfit kids, honor students and ADD-sufferers will instantly understand the humor and genius behind this project. The point is to have fun and express yourself!

i have been keeping up with srini's stickers since i was 14 (i'm 20 now!), so i can't tell you how cool it is to have gotten 462 of them for under [...] bucks! ^_^ i used to try to scrimp and save and only buy the ones that i thought were essentials, but now i have most of my favorites and tons more!

yay, srini!

update: after using the stickers for awhile, i discovered they are not so good at sticking. they usually peel up w/in an hour or so. it's great to have them, i just wish i didn't have to carry tape around when i want to use them.

SAS Portion is Awful

After reading the reviews here and of the SPSS version of the book, I took the plunge. What a mistake. Jeremy Miles butchered the SAS portion of this book, rendering it almost useless. I worked through to the end of the fourth chapter and found over half the examples had mistakes in them. Some minor, but some really serious. Through perseverence you can finally, most of the time, figure out what he's trying to show you, but that's not what I expect out of a book that costs this much. I'm trying to learn the material for my job and this book has been a huge disappointment. Don't waste your money until / unless they do a re-write. I was going to buy some of Andy Field's other books, but not after this disaster.

Disapointing - there are programming errors, also no companion website

I am returning this book. I began with the chapter on ANCOVA and found that syntax for the sample program the authors provide produces the wrong sum of squares, because the variables are entered into the model statement incorrectly. Also, the Sage publications website promises a companion website, but check this out before you consider buying. All that is offered is a poorly constructed, difficult to search through .doc file. False advertising. A doc file is not a website. The construction of the book is flimsy, even more flimsy than the SPSS version of this book. Also the pages are not glossy or color like Field's SPSS book, they are dull, low quality paper and eyesore to look at. Save your money.

I do recommend the SPSS version of this book, which is very helpful. I would recommend purchasing the SPSS book instead, and searching online to find the syntax for the types of programs you want to run using SAS.

Not a book for learning SAS

I agree with most of the other readers. The SAS part of this book is not very good. I can use it somewhat for reference when I need to perform a task in SAS, but honestly googling produces better results. There are all kinds of problems with the datasets for the exercises. I also couldn't even find Chapter 19's CosmeticSurgery.sas7bat file on the companion website. However, the writing is excellent and entertaining. So for that alone it is still worth, but don't get this book to learn SAS. I've heard the SPSS version is excellent, so if you don't care what software you use that might be less frustrating for a beginner. I'm not sure about the R edition of the book.

The collaboration of a clinical neuropsychologist and a behavioral neurologist, Clinical Neuroanatomy expands upon similar texts by offering an exceptionally extensive review of higher cortical – behavioral functions and their anatomical substrates. While a major text for students and clinicians in neuropsychology, it is highly relevant for behavioral and traditional neurologists, neuropsychiatrists, and others who have an interest in exploring the mysteries of brain-behavior relationships.

This book begins with a traditional review of the basic internal and external morphology, major nerve and fiber tracts, behavioral correlates, and clinical syndromes associated with spinal cord, brain stem, and cerebellum designed to reacquaint students and practicing clinicians with the functional anatomy of the subtentorial central nervous system. However, as the text was specifically geared to meet the needs of those practitioners whose primary interest is in what might be termed "higher order cognitive-behavioral function," the main focus of the text is on the brain itself. Borrowing heavily from a Lurian tradition, the central chapters reflect an attempt to offer more detailed, integrated, and, at times, theoretical models of cortical systems and their internal organization. Additional chapters highlight vascular anatomy and associated pathology, as well as neurochemical systems and their potential clinical relevance. The authors’ teaching style enlivens the material with clinical examples and welcomed touches of subtle humor.

Not worth it for us...

It was a somewhat interesting read, but of little practical use, beyond the basics (key cards, queen ask and specific kings) for my partner and I. We play precision with lot's of bells and whistles, including Roman key card, so we are not put off by complexity. But the nuances this book provides won't come up often enough to merit the time we'd have to invest. And the idea of playing both 1430 and 3014, depending upon the preceding auction, put me off from page one. I was able to force myself to finish the book, but I can't recommend it to anyone but the most serious players.

Not for solo reading...

In the Introduction, Eddie asks and answers the question: How can you best use this book? His answer: If you don't have a regular partner, you can't; don't even try.

I would add that if you and partner are not willing to take considerable time discussing each topic, agreeing what to include or exclude in your system and practicing your bidding until you've gotten the bugs out, then don't bother either.

That is not to say that solo reading can't be helpful. I studied the book with a regular tournament partner but also play with a number of other people in club games. Each of them know different aspects of RKC and having read through the entire book I am more comfortable adjusting to individual preferences (1430 vs. 3014 vs. using both; incorporating a basic "minorwood" RKC for the minors or Exclusion Blackwood.) So for the curious, feel free to read it cover to cover, but I honestly think without a dedicated partner you can spend your time more fruitfully improving some other aspect of your bridge game.

Required reading for any partnership serious about RKCB, Kickback, or Minorwood

The fundamental methods presented in this book are required reading for any serious partnership that wants to use Roman Keycard Blackwood, Kickback, and/or Minorwood without costly misunderstandings. Very few partnerships are on solid ground when there's a queen ask, opener wants information about kings, or when responder has a void.

If someone asks you whether you play 1430 or 3014, it's a dead giveaway that they don't really understand RKCB. Kantar explains why 1430 and 3014 responses exist and how to use them both according to rules that are based on logic and not difficult to remember.

Some players dislike the book because Kantar goes into an extraordinary level of detail about specific auctions and difficult situations, in which there's a point of diminishing returns. Less serious players can skip the esoterica and choose the level of detail appropriate to their own partnerships. When making those decisions, the use of highlight pens is strongly recommended.

In this middle-school drama, two seeming opposites become friends and discover they are not such opposites after all. Peters (How Do You Spell G-E-E-K?) does little to update this well-trod theme, and while there are touching moments in her book, it's generally bland. Nerdy Antonia is assigned to peer-counsel Jazz, whom Antonia assumes is "hopeless. A punker. A druggie. A gang hanger." After a few agonizing sessions, Antonia begins to realize how much she needs someone to talk to. Her dad has split (as readers learn midway through), her mom's so depressed she can't get out of bed and Antonia's overwhelmed with responsibility and pain. Not only does Jazz literally intervene to get her family back on the road to recovery, but by offering her friendship, Antonia learns to depend on someone besides herself. In turn, she helps Jazz learn to talk to her parents and to compromise on arguments without compromising herself. They both learn that judging people by their outside appearance can be misleading. Occasionally, Peters captures a feeling perfectly, like Antonia's loneliness. "That's how I feel, I thought. Like a star...," she says, looking at the sky. "Distant. Detached. Blinking. On-off. On-off." Mostly, though, the exposition depends more on telling than showing. Ages 8-12. (Apr.)

Grade 7-10-When Antonia is assigned to Jazz as a peer counselor, she figures there is no way she can help this tattooed, pierced, incorrigible girl. They are complete opposites. Antonia is a straight-A student whose parents are divorced and she is struggling to keep what's left of her family together as her mother battles depression. Jazz's family is wealthy and seemingly perfect. As they continue through the 15 hours of peer counseling, it becomes clear that both girls have issues they need to work through. They go from wary classmates to friends who support and help one another. As Antonia's mother is hospitalized for her depression, Jazz battles her own mother's need to control by quitting the one thing she loves most-playing classical piano. Both girls deal with their losses by finding new ways to look at their problems and to resume life as "normally" as possible. This believable book is well written and readers will feel that they know both Jazz and Antonia, and they will want to see them triumph over the frustrations in their lives.

Antonia Dillon, a driven honor student at Oberon Middle School, is not surprised when she is asked to become a peer counselor. It's just another honor to add to her resume. But her first counseling session is pure culture shock--Antonia has been paired with the notorious Jasmine "Jazz" Luther, a punker with incredible attitude who uses black lipstick and is into body piercing and tattoos. As the two girls reluctantly continue their sessions, a strange, tentative friendship develops, with each girl gradually revealing more and more about her troubled life. Antonia admits that her divorced mother is deeply depressed and unable to work or care for her family; Jazz talks about her controlling, materialistic yuppie parents and their expectations. As secret after secret is exchanged, it becomes obvious that the "priss" and the punker are made to be best friends. Although the book is marred by one-dimensional secondary characters and a pat conclusion, girls will still enjoy the appealing main characters in this after-school-special-style friendship story. A quick, enjoyable read that will also attract reluctant readers. Jean Franklin

Amazing book....

This story shows that maturity doesn't begin at a specific age. Glad books are out the that show a kid can have strength and grace. Hopefully everyone that reads this book is inspired and forced to think what we all can endure. Thanks again Ms Peters

this book is great i love it!!!if you like books with twist and make you

think youll love this one.it is all about this girl named antonia .she

offers to do this counsling thing at school(were she will talk to another

stundent, but cant tell anyone). shes known as the girl who gets the good grades and is perfuct when she has to counsle a punk named jazz.which when she finds this out she freeks and says she just cant do it that it wasnt going to work.during this book they just visit a certain amount of days a week in this small room,it didnt start off well because jazz didnt want to particpate,but the more they counsle the more they progress and learn about each other.soon they realize that they are both the same(in thier own different ways).during this though they are scared to talk in public still because they dont want people to see them talking.(because of their image). they both have problems wether they show it or not.one of the twist is even though antonia had the image that she was perfuct she had a family that was falling apart and even though jazz was a punk her family was rich preppy people who wanted her to play the piano.through the book you also learn that antonia mom is sick with depression and has not been takeing her medicine . so she is always in her room hibernating which leaves antonia to tend to her little brother, and jazz really does like playing sympothes on the piano .it makes you think because people just judge by aperance that you woulndt guess that if you were a out sider looking in.also in the end antonia finds out that a teacher she had set her up and the whole time wanted her to be counsled because the he realized that problems were going on in the home out side of school.she tried to play it off like she was cool and he was wring but in the end she sat down and thought and realized that her mom needed help .after everything they went though they became best friends and of course her mom gets better.jazz goes to a piano recitle and wins . of course its a happy ending but th most important thing is they both learned that you cant judge a book by its cover.

About the Author
Andrea Lunsford, Louise Hewlett Nixon Professor of English emerita and former Director of the Program in Writing and Rhetoric at Stanford University, joined the Stanford faculty in 2000. Prior to this appointment, Lunsford was Distinguished Professor of English at The Ohio State University (1986-2000). She has also been Associate Professor and Director of Writing at the University of British Columbia (1977-86). Currently a member of the faculty of the Bread Loaf School of English, Professor Lunsford earned her B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Florida and completed her Ph.D. in English at The Ohio State University (1977).Professor Lunsford's scholarly interests include contemporary rhetorical theory, women and the history of rhetoric, collaboration and collaborative writing, current cultures of writing, intellectual property and composing, style, and technologies of writing. For Bedford/St. Martin s, she is the author of "The St. Martin's Handbook," "The Everyday Writer," "EasyWriter," and "Writing in Action"; the co-author (with John Ruszkiewicz) of "Everything s an Argument "and (with John Ruszkiewicz and Keith Walters) of "Everything s an Argument with Readings"; and the co-author (with Lisa Ede) of "Writing Together: Collaboration in Theory and Practice." Professor Lunsford has conducted workshops on writing and program reviews at dozens of North American universities, served as Chair of the Conference on College Composition and Communication, as Chair of the Modern Language Association Division on Writing, and as a member of the MLA Executive Council."

I needed this book for my ENC1930 english class and renting this one was definitely the right choice. I payed very little and only had it for the time i needed it. Which is a bonus because i did not have to find out what to do with an extra book after I finished the course.

About the Author
Victoria Fromkin received her bachelor's degree in economics from the University of California, Berkeley, and her M.A. and Ph.D. in linguistics from the University of California, Los Angeles. She was a member of the faculty of the UCLA Department of Linguistics from 1966 until her death, and served as its chair from 1972 to 1976. From 1979 to 1989 she served as the UCLA Graduate Dean and Vice Chancellor of Graduate Programs. She was a visiting professor at the universities of Stockholm, Cambridge, and Oxford. Professor Fromkin served as president of the Linguistics Society of America in 1985, president of the Association of Graduate Schools in 1988, and chair of the Board of Governors of the Academy of Aphasia. She received the UCLA Distinguished Teaching Award and the Professional Achievement Award, and served as the U.S. Delegate and a member of the Executive Committee of the International Permanent Committee of Linguistics (CIPL). She was an elected Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the New York Academy of Science, the American Psychological Society, and the Acoustical Society of America, and in 1996 was elected to membership in the National Academy of Sciences. She published more than one hundred books, monographs, and papers on topics concerned with phonetics, phonology, tone languages, African languages, speech errors, processing models, aphasia, and the brain/mind/language interface--all research areas in which she worked. Professor Fromkin passed away in 2000, at the age of 76.

Robert Rodman received his bachelor's degree in mathematics from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1961, a master's degree in mathematics in 1965, a master's degree in linguistics in 1971, and a Ph.D. in linguistics in 1973. He has been on the faculties of the University of California at Santa Cruz, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Kyoto Industrial College in Japan, and North Carolina State University, where he is currently professor of computer science specializing in the areas of forensic linguistics, computer speech processing, and speaker verification and identification.

Nina Hyams received her bachelor's degree in journalism from Boston University in 1973 and her M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in linguistics from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York in 1981 and 1983, respectively. She joined the UCLA faculty in 1983, where she is currently professor of linguistics. Her main areas of research are childhood language development and syntax. She is author of LANGUAGE ACQUISITION AND THE THEORY OF PARAMETERS (D. Reidel Publishers, 1986), a milestone in language acquisition research. She has also published numerous articles on the development of syntax, morphology, and semantics in children. She has been a visiting scholar at the University of Utrecht and the University of Leiden in the Netherlands and has given numerous lectures throughout Europe and Japan.

Gives lots of information, but sometimes not enough.

This book is great that it gives you lots of information. But for people like me who have not focused on "grammar" in a long time it is EXTREMELY hard to read and get through. (And I am reading this book for the second linguistics class I have taken!). They assume that you know a lot of linguistics and grammar terminology - which is a very bad assumption - because if you don't know what the terms mean or haven't studied grammar in a long time you will be totally lost.

However, other parts are extremely easy to read and get through, plus they use a lot of examples and illustrations to show you what they are discussing, which is very helpful. Some of the terms that should be defined are defined long after they have been introduced - so maybe it is just poorly organized? If you can get a "cheat sheet" on linguistic and grammar terms before reading it will be very helpful to you. I unfortunately didn't have a choice since the book was required for class.

This was a required text for a language / linguistics course. It is dense but there is so much information and it was enjoyable to read. Wish I could afford to own a copy (rented Kindle for PC).

Better than most Introductory Linguistics texts

My current text for Introductory Linguistics at the UMN would be incomprehensible without reading this first. Many of the examples in that text appear to have been lifted from this classic. Even though Victoria Fromkin has been dead for ?20? years.

About the Author
Professor Peter Halley is a leading international expert in bio-based polymers and translational polymer research. His initial work on Australia's first biodegradable thermoplastic starch polymers led to the establishment of spin-off company Plantic Technologies, venture financing, sales of commercially-viable products and a continued research provider relationship with Plantic. Professor Halley has led translational research projects in biopolymers and biofluid platforms for agrifood, biomedical and high-value manufacturing sectors which have attracted both government and industry funding; and produced patents, licences and new industrial know-how. Professor Halley is a fellow of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI) and the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE). He is on the editorial board of four journals.

Professor Luc Av�rous is a leading international expert in bio-based and/or biodegradable polymers. He started working on thermoplastic starch in 1996 to develop biodegradable packaging. During the two last decades, his major research projects have dealt with biobased and/or biodegradable polymers for environmental and biomedical applications. On these topics, he has published hundreds of scientific communications (articles, books chapters, patents and proceeding papers) with more than 2500 citations, thanks to strong collaborations with foreign labs and international companies. He is on the editorial board of more than ten journals. He has recently co-published 2 books (2011 and 2012).
