No Bones About It -- An Important Book

Sarah Schulman's recent book, "The Gentrification of the Mind: Witness to a Lost Imagination" is one of the most important books of the year. In it, she confronts the problem of gentrification that is endemic to urban neighborhoods in our liveliest cities. Gentrification effectively turns our creative hubs, teeming with diversity, into bland "suburbs in the cities," homogenizing people, tastes, and how we interpret our lives.

My new book, "This Ain't No Holiday Inn: Down and Out at the Chelsea Hotel 1980-1995″ addresses gentrification in its final chapters. But Schulman's book explores gentrification in detail, using the AIDS plague as its central example. The common attitude today is that, "Oh, we took care of AIDS; it's no longer a problem," is a perfect example of how not only our neighborhoods become gentrified, but our very minds become colonized by ignorant attitudes largely propagated by members of the white elite class. Even some gays, more concerned with fitting in than with fighting for their rights, share the attitude.

Here's how Schulman defines gentrification: "Physically it is an urban phenomena: the removal of communities of diverse classes, ethnicities, races, sexualities, languages, and points of view from the central neighborhoods of cities, and their replacement by more homogenized groups. With this comes the destruction of culture and relationship, and this destruction has profound consequences for the future lives of cities."

Did you know that Manhattan and San Francisco used to be affordable for young artists, rebels, bohemians, and freaks to move to and find a home with people like themselves? Now only the rich can afford to move there, so they can be with other rich folk like themselves. Tell me with a straight face that this does not dumb down our culture, our arts, and create a bland, conformist complacency that keeps the rich in power and the poor in poverty.

Superb Book

This is one of the best books I've ever read about the death of entire areas of big cities and the death of beautiful cultures. I was recently in New York City and I didn't even recognize the street where I used to live. Saint Vincent's Hospital will now be condos for gentrified folks who only drink lattes at $5.00 a cup. What happened to Christopher Street? Where are all the beautiful card shops and coffee houses? All I saw were boutiques and Starbucks! Even Times Square is now Disneyland with people dressed up like Hello Kitty and Minnie Mouse and demanding money from gullible tourists for having their picture taken. Is the East Village still alive? I remember this area when it was thriving.
I now live in Boston and sadly, the same is happening here. New two bedroom condos now go for a million!
Kudos to Sarah Schulman. I am seriously thinking of using this book in one of the classes I teach. Excellent read.

Transformative

I am not an academic, but am a queer writer and an artist. I loved this book and am so glad I bought a hard copy, because I'll be rereading it.

I have not read such a transformative nonfiction book since reading Pat Califia's "Public Sex" in 1994. This book is invigorating. There are so many sections that I loved; when she wrote about the dearth of lesbians in literature in chapter six, it was both a knife to the heart and a cry to battle.

This book was short enough not to intimidate me with academia, yet just the right length to compel me to buy Schulman's new book, "Conflict is not Abuse: Overstating Harm, Community Responsibility and the Duty of Repair."

summarises many surveys

The authors point out that the book is somewhat late. Originally thought of in early 2001, in response to the end of the Cold War. But history proceeded to intervene in September of that year. The radical changes in US foreign policy necessitated a complete redirection of the book. But it is still about the US and how Americans perceived and coped with evolving dangers in the world.

Of these, the proliferation of nuclear weapons is a major topic. Another is the spending policies of the US government. Unsurprisingly, an entire chapter is devoted to terrorism. The book summarises and interprets many surveys taken in the last 10 years, about these issues. The surveys were of US public opinion. The motivation of the analyses is to suggest how the government can best present policies and decisions to the public, as well as possibly use the surveys to find the most acceptable policies.

Arjun Nath becomes Phaedrus in this gripping narration of his troubled past, as he weaves together the threads of his life, his struggle with heroin, and his irreversible and inevitable descent into madness and personal hell. His honest portrayal, reminiscent of both "Catcher in the Rye" and "Zen and the art of Motorcycle Maintenance" is a gripping and harrowing tale, and yet gives hope, because it is a story of redemption. Interspersed with glimpses of the life of his friend and guru Yusuf Merchant, woven together with wit and dark humor, at times shocking and provocative, this is a story of many threads and lives intersecting in space and time. Each character is distinctive and real, extraordinary in their own way, connected , but separated by the prism of their own struggles, trying to overcome their ghosts- real and imagined. In many ways, it's a story of the fabric of life which binds us all together, and as we rush through it, this work creates a pause. And in that, in the ability to cause the reader to stop lies the genius of the author. For in the end, Nath discards the robes of Phaedrus and comes into his own...

Thoughtful and insightful explanations of our present moral and cultural decay

Jack Chick and David W. Daniels have been HUGE with my understanding how present day events erode our moral compasses without our even realizing it on occasion. We have been brainwashed to believe that many predicaments occurring around us are, on the surface, "harmless", when in truth they are anything BUT.

I am thankful to Chick and Daniels for all their publications, as these have helped my own spiritual growth as a KJV Bible and God believing Christian, for without them, my road may have been a bit rockier. Thanks Gents!!

Great book!

This is a a great book that will pull you right in from the very first page. Like the first book in the series, it is full of twists and turns and surprises. It's a very entertaining book and a great premise. The powers are very interesting and a great concept. The author has a lot of imagination. I definitely recommend this one.

I met my friend, Navajo code talker Chester Nez, more than four years ago. Writing Chester's memoir has changed both of our lives for the better. I have gained a second family, and Chester is pleased that people will know the story of himself and his fellow Navajos, the WWII code talkers. It is a story that remained a secret for too long. We hope that you will enjoy reading our book as much as we enjoyed writing it!!

The book's dedication says a lot about the focus of the book and Chester's desire to have all code talkers recognized:

This book is dedicated to the 420 World War II Navajo Marine code talkers - men who developed and implemented an unbreakable communications system that helped ensure the American defeat of the Japanese in the Pacific War.

When the war ended, other combatants were free to discuss their roles in the service and to receive recognition for their actions. But the Marines instructed us, the code talkers, to keep our accomplishments secret. We kept our own counsel, hiding our deeds from family, friends and acquaintances. Our code was finally declassified in 1968, twenty-three years after the war's end.

This book may be my story, but it is written for all of these men.

May they and their loved ones walk in beauty.

About the Author
Chester Nez was a World War II veteran who indispensably served his country as a Navajo code talker. He passed away in 2014.

Judith Schiess Avila is a code talker scholar with the New Mexico Endowment for the Humanities Chautauqua Program. She tours the state giving presentations on the topic.

Be very careful ....

I can only advise prospective readers to be very careful if you have work that has to be done ... you will NOT want to put this book down once you start reading. As a former high school teacher I wish that this book was required reading for every teen. The work ethic, dedication, and moral character demonstrated by Chester Nez is genuinely inspirational. I learned a great deal about the Navajo culture and values, and how these values were integral to their success in battle, and their entire life. The campaigns on Guadalcanal, Guam, Peleliu and Bougainville owe a great deal of their success to the actions of the Navajo Code Talkers. Many of the code talkers have gone to their reward unable to relate their invaluable contribution to winning the war in the Pacific. We, as Americans, are truly fortunate that Chester Nez finally told the story of these incredible individuals.

Semper Fi, Chester ... I can only hope that some day I may have the honor of meeting you.

A rare book

If you are looking for a one of a kind history book this is it. There really is only one book written by a Code Talker and this book he explains how the famous talkers where formed and where they served.

One of the more interesting aspects of this book concerns the man’s life and culture. The author spends a lot of time explaining Navaho traditions and beliefs. He does a priceless job of interweaving this into the history of the second world war. This is truly what makes his book special. I enjoyed these moments learning about the Navaho as much as I enjoyed the sections dealing with the war in eh Pacific.

None-the-less a sense of modesty of the author leaves out specific details regarding his personal performance in the war. But he showers his contemporaries with praise for their action. I would have liked more detail about the specific battles. This may be a cultural thing as he says his people are very private people who do not boast of their personal accomplishments.

This book has a priceless place in history. I was amazed to find that native American languages had been used in WWI to confuse to Germans. However, they were not used to a higher level until World War Two.

There are many great personal accounts of World War Two. But there really isn’t anything to compare this one to. It is really the only book written by a Code Talker. If you want to know more about the war in the Pacific in general I would recommend, “With the Old Breed,” by E.B. Sledge an, “Helmet for my Pillow,“ by Robert Leckie. Both of these men fought in battles that would have had code talkers serving win the ranks.

Important reminder

I have a special appreciation of such memoirs that show how it was for those who served in not only the adversity of war, but of culture differences, there are too few. They are great reminders of the changes that WWII started in our society and continued through the 80s before the inevitable ebb of diversity began to swing the other direction. It's important to remember the contributions to freedom that native americans, blacks, hispanics, and even Japanese-Americans made.

Do not expect 100% accuracy for the flow of battles and such. That is not the intent of this book, it is one mans remembrance of how things went. The more important part is his role, and you won't find a more detailed place to see the code-talkers role explained.

Throughout my lifetime, I've poured over the accounts of the marine assaults, and in every one, the code-talkers appear as a crucial element, finally I actually get insight into their story specifically. I was impressed with the Corps too, for recognizing and nurturing a winning talent and capability. It showed yet another bit of the foresight of some top Marines for innovation (something I've often noted in the Marines WWII attempts to go outside the box).

About the Author
Jennifer Waldeck (Ph.D., University of California, Santa Barbara) is an Assistant Professor of Communication at Chapman University, in Orange, California, where she teaches undergraduates and is on the core faculty of the M.S. program in Health and Strategic Communication. She specializes in instructional and organizational communication research, with an emphasis on the effective use of new and emerging technologies for learning purposes. Her research has appeared in such journals as Communication Monographs, Communication Education, The Journal of Applied Communication Research, Communication Research Reports, and The Journal of Business Communication. She is the author of more than 100 research articles, chapters, instructional texts, professional reports, and proprietary instructional packages. Before joining the faculty of Chapman, Waldeck was the Director of Curriculum Development for Scher Group, a Cleveland-based consulting firm. Waldeck continues to provide research, consulting, and training for a variety of organizations in the automotive, real estate, and healthcare industries. Today, she regularly teaches undergraduate courses in business and professional communication, organizational communication, persuasion and social influence, research methods., and graduate seminars on training, consulting, and corporate communication skills for the healthcare industry.

Patricia Kearney (Ed.D., West Virginia University) is a Distinguished Professor of Communication at California State University, Long Beach. Her research and teaching, both theoretical and applied, focus on instructional communication, organizational training, and development. The former Editor of Communication Education, Kearney has written a variety of textbooks and industrial training packages, and she has published more than 100 research articles, chapters, and commissioned research reports and instructional modules. She is listed among the 100 most published scholars and among the top 15 published female scholars in her discipline. Kearney is the Education Director for Ross.Campbell, a Sacramento-based marketing and media production firm specializing in cause-related, social and environmental issues. She teaches courses in business communication, training and development, instructional technology, and interpersonal relationships.

Timothy G. Plax (Ph.D., University of Southern California) is a Distinguished Professor of Communication at California State University, Long Beach. Plax is widely published, having authored college-level texts and over 150 professional articles and papers. With 30 years of experience in marketing research and message design, Plax is an authority on social influence and organizational communication. He has done extensive research and consulting on environmental topics including recycling, waste reduction, and pollution prevention. His clients include the California Air Resources Board, California Integrated Waste Management Board, California Department of Conservation, USA Funds, Sallie Mae, Gear Up, and more. Before joining the faculty at CSULB, Plax served as an internal consultant for The Rockwell International Corporation. Today he regularly teaches courses in organizational communication, social influence, and organizational leadership.

I really enjoyed learning through this book

I really enjoyed learning through this book. It offers a variety of professional advice that can be carried with you throughout all your professional experiences in life. I actually refer to this book often, even during other courses because its contents are so useful. From writing reports, to creating a presentation through PowerPoint, to professional communication with co-workers, to job interviews, this book gives you tips and recommendations for it all! This book also offers real life examples so that you may understand concepts and definitions. It truly outlines the importance of good communication skills in professional settings and compares these skills to less professional settings. Many other products do not provide information like this. Many other communication books do not offer advice; they just define and leave you to interpret the concepts. This book is not boring to read or study, and it is an excellent tool when preparing for the future. The objective of this book is to prepare the reader or the student to be a better communicator, listener, and professional.

I really like the outline and order of the sections in this text. It first starts with the basics like professional competence to help the reader understand the model of communication. It then refers to communication in the workplace and how to make your best effort count in the real world. The job interview process is also addressed in the text by sharing the appropriate way to conduct oneself and by offering questions that you should be prepared to answer in the interview. Along with this, if your book is new and comes with the on-line portion (CourseMate), there are modules that show how to write a resume and cover letter by giving advice and examples. The book also teaches how to create a presentation based on the audience, topic, and your own credibility. With this, sensory aids are proposed to help you make your presentation a success. Lastly, the book helps you present yourself in professional and business writing. I also liked that at the end of each chapter, key points are listed to help you study and review for tests and projects. The above topics are the features of the book that really stuck with me after studying it and learning.

Even if you are not a student, but you are preparing to job hunt or to create professional work through communication, I highly advise taking a look at this book. I have used information I learned through this book to create presentations and to write professional e-mails, papers, formal reports, and resumes. Overall, I consider this book a great resource for business courses and for future reference. I know that I will look through it often, as I become closer to reaching my professional degree.

Do NOT buy the combo pack!

Do NOT buy the combo pack; Pearson scammed my instructor by telling her that you needed to buy the book and the MySearchLab Access Card, but the access card provides you with an electronic copy of the book. That makes buying the combo pack pointless and false advertising. If you want the book, just pay for the Standalone Access Card. You'll be saving over $100 by doing so.
