Great Guide

I teach English at a private school for homeschoolers, where the students attend school one day a week. I spend five weeks on this book and just love it, and I know it shows when I teach this book. Even though I love this book, having this study guide has helped me a lot with my lesson plans. I have a class of 24 (9th and 10th graders), and needed some standard questions for their journals and also some ideas for them for writing essays. This book helped me with both, as well as helping me study the text further on my own.

About the Author
Thomas P. Edmonds, Ph.D.: Dr. Edmonds is Professor of Accountancy at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, (UAB). He has been actively involved in teaching accounting principles throughout his academic career. He has received several prestigious teaching awards, including the UAB President’s Excellence in Teaching Award and the distinguished Ellen Gregg Ingalls Award for excellence in classroom teaching. His academic experience includes being published in the Journal of Accounting Education, the Accounting Review, and the Journal of Accounting, Auditing and Finance among others. Dr. Edmonds received his Ph.D. in Accounting from Georgia State University.

A good book with the right instructor

I've read the reviews stating that this is a confusing book. I disagree completely. Although the author does not immediately delve into traditional T-accounts, the introduction of the "horizontal model" serves as a good foundation for building the awareness of the accounting equation that should be second nature BEFORE tackling T-accounts. The text's preface states: "A horizontal financial statements model replaces the accounting equation as the predominant teaching platform. The model enables students to VISUALIZE THE SIMULTANEOUS EFFECTS OF A SINGLE BUSINESS EVENT on the income statement, balance sheet, and statement of cash flows." I felt as though this methodology was very effective for my learning style. Recording transactions in T-accounts came almost as second nature after mastering the horizontal model.
The "Working Papers" (a separate workbook) makes doing the assigned problems easy by providing a ready-made template for each problem. If you've had to draw your own T-accounts or your own journal in a notebook before, you will definitely appreciate this.
This text serves as a good introduction to the skills necessary to master financial accounting.

Best book on the market

I'm a professor at a large state university. On the rare occasions when I teach this course, I always order the Edmonds book.

I believe the purpose of introductory or fundamental financial accounting is to teach students how to read and use finanacial statements. If used properly by the instructor, this is one of only two books on the market (the other is for MBA students) that can be used for this purpose.

I whole-heartedly endorse the horizontal model used by Edmonds, et. al. Most text book writers use a form of it. I even use it in my writings.

Some students want to learn debits and credits. In my opinion, this is best left to technical courses in accounting for those interested in the nuts and bolts.

However, for anyone who want to get something long-lasting from the course, this text book combined with the right professor, will be about the only option.

If this or any text book is used to teach technical aspects at the fundamental level, you won't have a good experience. Techinical aspects are best covered in Intermediate Accounting.

This text is abysmal. It is riddled with errors and omissions, gives incomplete examples, and presents information unsequentially. It relies too much and for too long on the horizontal model without practical applicatoin to journals and statements. If your college uses this text (as Medaille College and Finger Lakes Community College currently do) run away!

Fortunately, many of the gaps are filled in by the PowerPoint� presentations they make available on their support site: [...] Note that these presentations are more extensive than the ones on the Topic Tackler CD that comes with the book. You must download these presentations if you want to have a chance with this book.

About the Author

Marge Lial was always interested in math; it was her favorite subject in the first grade! Marge's intense desire to educate both her students and herself has inspired the writing of numerous best-selling textbooks. Marge, who received Bachelor's and Master's degrees from California State University at Sacramento, is now affiliated with American River College.

 

Marge is an avid reader and traveler. Her travel experiences often find their way into her books as applications, exercise sets, and feature sets. She is particularly interested in archeology. Trips to various digs and ruin sites have produced some fascinating problems for her textbooks involving such topics as the building of Mayan pyramids and the acoustics of ancient ball courts in the Yucatan.

 

Raymond N. Greenwell earned a B.A. in Mathematics and Physics from the University of San Diego, and an M.S. in Statistics, an M.S. in Applied Mathematics, and a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from Michigan State University, where he earned the graduate student teaching award in 1979. After teaching at Albion College in Michigan for four years, he moved to Hofstra University in1983, where he currently is Professor of Mathematics.

 

Raymond has published articles on fluid mechanics, mathematical biology, genetic algorithms, combinatorics, statistics, and undergraduate mathematics education. He is a member of MAA, AMS, SIAM, NCTM, and AMATYC. He is currently (2002-2005) governor of the Metropolitan New York Section of the MAA, as well as webmaster and liaison coordinator, and he received a distinguished service award from the Section in 2003. He is an outdoor enthusiast and leads trips in the Sierra Club’s Inner City Outings program.

 

Nathan P. Ritchey earned a B.A. in Mathematics with a minor in Music from Mansfield University of Pennsylvania. He earned a M.S. in Applied Mathematics and a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Carnegie Mellon University. He is currently a Professor of Mathematics and Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Youngstown State University. He has published articles in economics, honors education, medicine, mathematics, operations research, and student recruitment. Nate is a Consultant/Evaluator for the North Central Association's Higher Learning Commission and regularly participates in program evaluations.

 

In recognition of his numerous activities, Nate has received the Distinguished Professor Award for University Service, the Youngstown Vindicator's "People Who Make a Difference Award," the Watson Merit Award for Department Chairs, the Spirit in Education Award from the SunTex corporation, and the Provost's Merit Award for significant contributions to the Honors Program.

Lial has written a really excellent book here

Lial has written a really excellent book here. It is somewhat different from the typical calculus books one reads: there is less formalism and greater apeal to your intuition (hence the title). Lial works hard to ground the book to reality, so is it useful and applicable, rather than just an exercise in superficial algebraic regurgitation as so many others teach calculus to be. This is a work that wants you to understand not only how...but why! This is a truly important approach: because if you understand why, then you understand how and you have the flexibility to really use the calculus. Just knowing how means you loose some of the connection and treat it as a process rather than a tool. This books at times feels deep, like the philosophy of calculus in addition to a howto, not just a perfunctry, dry how-to.
Lial provides realistic examples and focus attention on scientific and practical uses of calculus: eg motion down a inclined plain, projectiles, etc. There are lots of problems in each section. ONly complaint: the answers are a little sparse at times. Generally the problems are robust and a little tricky know and then (this is good! Makes you interpret and apply...not just apply). The literacy components are quite strong in questions. Kline has an excellent teaching pedagogy!
The style of writing is excellent, familiar and warm. Lial write like he is like that smart, cool, friendly lecturer we found once at university and longed for the rest of the time we were there. He clearly loves what he is teaching and wants you to succeed and tries to help you to do so. His language is not so stilted as most mathematics books seem to be; humor creeps in here and there which is cool because it makes you feel welcome inside the book, not just a nobody to whom the author is indifferent.
The book is arranged in a typical sequence (you can look inside the book and see that). And is the best value for money calculus book I have EVER seen: it is VERY good. If you want a book of calculus problems buy Schaum's...but if you want to understand calculus...buy this! of course this an introductory calculus book so there is no vector calculus, but it does get multivariate!
In all: well worth the 5 stars and the cool price! Shame more books are not like this one.

Good to have, but not perfect

I bought this here because it was one of two places I could find this book - period! The book was slightly lacking in detail and the layout isn't amazing. All-in-all, it's a good resource if you have some knowledge to go with it! Luckily my friend did several hours of online research before we attempted to swap the clutch in my Paseo! ;-)

Great for this 14 year old!

Hi, Im 14 and have been reading Dear Dumb Diary Books for quite some time now, since I was around 9 or 10 years old.. (though, I am not sure).

For the past 3 years, coming to 4th, I have asked and received the newest Dear Dumb Diary for Christmas.
Though I am older then the Amazon Reading Level , I frankly, do not care. I'm going to keep reading these books as much as they keep coming out.

I think the Books are amazing and funny. I love the illustrations.
Right now, I dont have a favorite of all because I just love them so much. I cant wait till the next book arrives. I read it so quickly, but that's Fine as long as i get to read it.

I really recommend it.

Im so excited for the next book. Everyone should be, they are awesome!

Christmas is taking forever to come. I'm sure the wait will be worth it.

I think I'm still reading these books because they are something funny and I was able to relate to it and that I started reading them at the recommended age so I was able to grow liking them alot. I think it's just my taste of books. I'm actually pretty sure that if i had never read them before, and ran into them at the age of 14, I would still buy them.

HILARIOUS!!!

I thought this book was hilarious. I love all of the Dear Dumb Diary books. Jim Benton does a very good job of writing these. He writes them just like a diary. I would never expect a guy to write stories about a girl and her problems. The drawings that are in the book make me laugh. I love how Jamie Kelly "hates" Angeline because she's so beautiful and popular. Jamie wants Angeline to be a brat but she's not so Jamie has to pretend that she is anyway. The entries about the wedding are realistic. I have been in a wedding before and could relate to the humor of not liking the bridesmaid's dresses or flowers. I loved this book and I hope he keeps on writing them.

Very funny, even for adults.

I saw this book at the library and checked it out for my first grader. I didn't realize it was a bit too old for her until I started reading it. The sad thing is I couldn't stop reading it. Jim Benton's Jamie Kelly makes observations that will have anyone who has ever participated in a wedding laugh out loud.

Recommended for preteens.
