About the Author
James Bagnall, the Associate Business Editor at The Ottawa Citizen, has been reporting on business since 1978. He began his career at The Financial Post and The Financial Times of Canada before joining the Citizen in 1993. Bagnall has won multiple business writing awards and has also been nominated four times for National Newspaper Awards -- and won in 2013 for his coverage of Nortel Networks. He spent months during 2012 in the courtroom of Judge Frank Marrocco, providing coverage of one of the most complicated trials in Canadian business history. Bagnall’s reporting is informed by his considerable international experience which he gained through organizing and writing special reports on South Africa, India, Israel, Germany and Britain. Bagnall has also written extensively on the federal government and its many agencies. He graduated in 1975 from University of Toronto’s Trinity College.

Excellent analysis

The book is a clear and succinct description of the major issues that drove the Board of Nortel to take the actions leading to the inappropriate and unfortunate treatment of the CEO, CFO and Controller of the company. While the author covered many issues in depth and clearly helped clairfy what transpired, it would have been helpful to have his views on why an otherwise distinguished board would seemingly panic and take immediate action in a situation that seemed to demand sober second thought and cooroboration of the iniital, and later found to be inncorrect, findings of the law firm.
Based on the information available, it seems that Board members with a reasonable understanding of accounting and finance, could have drilled down into the weak supporting information and raised questions about the intial recommendations provided to the Board. Deep industry knowledge does not seem to have been a critical requirement to reach the right conclusions.
Mr Bagnall's book is useful and interesting reading for anyone interested in the demise of Nortel, the role of the Board as well as governance more generally.

the trial from the perspective of the defendants

This book concentrates on the trial of the Nortel senior execs in Ontario and is told from their perspective. clearly the author interviewed the defendants and received a lot of help from them. I happen to feel that the judge was right, there was no criminality in the accounting. Bear in mind that mistakes or ignorance are generally not criminal offences. I also agree with the book's premise that the board was either frightened or forced into throwing the finance execs to the wolves of Wilmer Cutler. It saved the reputation of the board members, at the expense of the execs and Nortel, which never recovered from the body blows.

A fascinating story about the demise of Nortel

I worked at Nortel, and before that BNR, for over 20 years so I was eager to read this story about the downfall of what had been Canada's largest and most successful hi-tech company. The author does a great job describing what went on behind the scenes as the company spiralled downward into oblivion. Despite reams of financial regulations, a phalanx of auditors, Sarbanes-Oxley, and a Board chock full of seemingly experienced executives (or perhaps because of...), Nortel went into bankruptcy. It's now dying a long and painful death as hundreds of lawyers squabble over the remaining assets.
Nortel Pensioners and former Shareholders should read 100 Days to better understand why Nortel died.
