So far so good....

I am through the first exercises of the book and have read a little further but decided to stop because I want to finish the exercises and reflect on my accomplishments before I move on. So far I love it. This is the first time I feel like someone "gets it". I can't afford to hire someone to help, so I've asked family for assistance and in a few months I'm back where I started. My sister doesn't understand why I have clutter and sometimes I don't either. Peter lays it all out for you in his book and assures you that there's nothing wrong with you. The way you and your family manage, not organize, your stuff is the problem.

Peter doesn't address "stuff" like most books and organizers. Instead, he asks what your family wants in life, and if the stuff you have is doing that for you. More than likely if you're reading this book, it's not!

Have you ever looked in magazines, and now pinterest, wishing for that perfect room to be in your house, but feel discouraged before you even get started and quickly give up? Me too!

Peter teaches you to look at your "stuff" differently and helps you throw out whatever excuse, fear or uncertainty you have to get started. I believe most people who have a problem with stuff are not lazy. I'm not. I am a wife, mother, commuter, full-time employee and I have to clean my own house. There isn't room for lazy, but there is room for clutter and "stuff" in the corners of my life.

You may think sitting down and reading Peter's book is a waste of time and that you should be cleaning instead. Trust me, I believe the time you invest in the book and exercises will increase your chances for success. Like we all know and Peter emphasizes, it didn't get this way in a week, so it probably won't clean up in a week. Keep going, we are!

Good Stuff

"Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful."

I love Peter Walsh on "Clean Sweep" and Oprah! I really took to heart the day he held up a stained, torn, crappy looking sewing basket and asked a lady if it accurately represented her Grandmother or her feelings for her Grandmother. The book is an expansion of what we have seen him do on TV.

This book wasn't life shattering, but reinforced some of what I have been feeling to be true over the last few years. Pointing out that sometimes we buy something with a purpose in mind, but it never seems to fulfill that purpose. To get rid of it feels like failure, wasting money; holding on to it feels like making it somehow worth the money spent. I am trying to make wiser purchases to avoid that feeling.

Family heirlooms deserve honor and respect. If they are covered in dust, at the bottom of piles, buried somewhere you don't even remember, are you treating them appropriately? What would it mean if they were never discovered again? If you keep them, take care of them. If they aren't worth the time to do that, it's time to give them up. What are you clinging to?

Clutter, dust, disorganization, guilt are weights on our body. They are a toll we pay daily.

You should love the rooms you live in.

I try to not fall into the Self-help book syndrome. But, I really like what Peter has to say, and will probably buy more by him. I definitely should re-read this book periodically to keep my rooms on track!

A MUST READ for everyone

I read this book a year ago and I have recommended it to many friends and family members. My husband read it also, he wasn't that excited to read it, but he did it for me. We tackled our clutter together and we included the kids. At the end of our two week purge project we had a huge yard sale and we were able to get rid of our storage unit rental.

I am an ANXIOUS person. My two teenagers are too. The real miracle that came from reading this book is the anxiety relief. Buying stuff, moving stuff, storing stuff, cleaning stuff, organizing stuff and sitting in the middle of piles of stuff really makes a person anxious. I didn't even realize it until my mom bought me this book. I was always telling my mom that I didn't mind having a messy house because I was focused on my kids and job. When the kids moved out I would focus on cleaning, but until then, it wasn't priority. I was wrong! Getting rid of the clutter made life for our family much better. We actually enjoyed being home.

It feels like a huge weight has been lifted!

Great books for young adults and teens

*** THESE BOOKS ARE NOT HORROR NOVELS!!!*** Amazon has them incorrectly categorized as such. I would categorize them as suspense/thriller novels.

This book series is great for teen and young adult readers. My daughter loved them, and after reading them myself I agree they are great stories. The author is not well known here in the US. When reading them you have to get past the "Aussie" lingo. Other than that, the author does a good job telling the story and keeping you hooked. I was also pleasantly surprised to find nothing inappropriate in the books. They are safe for tweens and teens.

Presents abridged versions of other reviews

This book merely presents abridged versions of other reviews on nanotechnology. For example, the chapter on self-assembly misses most if not all if the initial discoveries and describes second and third generation reports that merely duplicate the concepts with new chemical building blocks. If one reads the reviews cited at the end of the chapters one will get a better view of the respective topics.

Who writes a book on a subject they don't understand?

This is probably the worst book I've ever had to read. The authors either misses the point or misunderstands the point, systematically. Most of the examples in the early parts of the book are about the authors own research, on mass spectrometry (who cares about 5nm xenon clusters in nanotech?). It has nothing to do with tuning of functional properties in materials, witch nanotechnology is really all about. The solid state physics part is very thin, and the models used (exitons and jellium) are not especially good, and they are old. The chemistry part in this book is awful, no one will pass even basic chemistry with this degree of knowledge. The parts about characterisation is ok, but all the figures is copy-pasted from articles and is not really consistent. They don't look the same and the axises is reversed on every other figure.

The books definition is also strict to everything that is bigger than an atom, but smaller than 100nm is nanotechnology. This is used to justify i.e. why (the authors claim) that proteins and DNA is nanotechnology.

My conclusion is: If you need an introduction to nanotechnology find another book.

Not worth the money

Perhaps this book would suffice as a surface reference, but it should not be used as the primary text for any course. The coverage is sparse at best, and it seems unlikely that anyone who didn't already understand the topics covered could do so with this book alone.

Perhaps it serves a purpose, but it cannot be used extensively.

Schizophrene--another great book from Bhanu Kapil!

I have unexpectedly become a fan of Kapil's books these last years. One enters each through revisitation. Her texts are like places--you arrive as a foreigner, hesitant, seeing the unusual, the unexpected, but you continue to explore and reread lines and paragraphs and pages until you fall in love and feel at home in the world she has made for you.

Kapil's works have an immediate poetic draw where one encounters dazziling lines like "It's already late. A black world coming down from the heavens. Black with stars."(p9, Schizophrene) A few pages get read over and over again, and then you are hooked. There is something hard to explain about how her works connect--they feel at once dense and loose.

At work is collage, lines and spaces between those lines. As she writes: "When it's rotted to the bone, the paper is covered with metallic fur, which is not paper. 'It was a contemporary voice that had the same power as a foundational voice.' No. It's a first line, then a second, the fragments overlapping with a visceral sound, where the pages stick. I unstick them to see. To read." ((p58, Schizophrene)

We, too, as readers, unstick these pages, see and read, feel the visceral, the unexpected violence in parts, the beauty also in others.

And with this short work, Schizophrene, there is also a curious transparency of process--beginning with "Passive Notes" which introduces this book, speaking transparently about what the author had wanted and how what is here came about through failure and rebeginnings--and closing with her "acknowledgements and quick notes" which again reveals process by revealing encounters both artistic and educational (things learned, from whom) which helped this book come to be.

For anyone interested in montage, collage, books of place, of journey, of language, books which are looking at the foreigner and a sense of home or estrangement--this is for you. It is delicate and fierce, and though small, is large in its scope and is magnified by its own need to be read and read again. Schizophrene, like Kapil's body of work, is a correspondance with its readers, opening in them new spaces of langauge.
