About the Author
Neil V. Watson and the members of his lab at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada study sex-related aspects of the structure and function of the nervous system, with ongoing grant support from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. His work on topics ranging from the effects of steroids on cell survival, to the neural control of reproductive behavior, to human cognitive sex differences has appeared in a variety of journals, including the Journal of Neuroscience, the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, and Brain Research. Dr. Watson received his undergraduate and master's degrees from the University of Western Ontario and his Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia. Following a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California, Berkeley, he joined the faculty at SFU in 1996 where he is now Professor of Neuroscience in the Department of Psychology. He teaches biological psychology to hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students each year. S. Marc Breedlove, the Barnett Rosenberg Professor of Neuroscience at Michigan State University, has written over 130 scientific articles investigating the role of hormones in shaping the developing and adult nervous system, publishing in journals including Science, Nature, Nature Neuroscience, and the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science. He is also passionate about teaching-in the classroom, and in the greater community through interviews with the Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, New York Times, and Newsweek, as well as broadcast programs such as All Things Considered, Good Morning America, and Sixty Minutes. He has active grant support from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke and the National Institute of Mental Health. Dr. Breedlove is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Association for Psychological Science.

Pretty good

Very interesting textbook. Easy to read even though the subject material is dense. It can take a while to really wrap your mind around it all. My Biopsych class in Fall I think was one of the first to use it so the website wasn't completely functional yet which kind of sucked. It lacked those extra study resources. It is cool to have a book that has such up to date information in it. Even mentions Pixar's Inside Out which just came out earlier this year.

Frida Kahlo's cult reputation has been blossoming for over ten years, particularly among feminists. Rumors that Madonna is planning a film about the artist will probably generate mainstream interest in, if not understanding of, her disturbingly personal works. The complexities of Kahlo's painful, joyful, notorious, and gay life are well presented in the text. Despite obvious affection for the subject, Zamora neither glosses over Kahlo's nonconformity nor tries to make a martyr of her. Yet however fair, these biographical notes are sparse and anecdotal, whetting the newcomer's interest but not offering much to the informed reader. More important here is the collection of 75 color plates of the artist's original works. Of interest to the initiated because they comprise largely seldom-seen works in various Mexican collections, these plates represent the best collection now available of Kahlo's work. Recommended for most collections as a companion to Hayden Herrera'a Frida ( LJ 1/15/83), a readable and complete biography.

Great book!

Frida Kahlo is my favorite artist, so of course I love this book. Other reasons I love it: the pictures, which show Frida's exquisite beauty, the paintings (not any I haven't seen, though I still love seeing them), and the story, which told some things I did not know. Although I really like this book, it was not very in-depth. I already knew most of the information that was in it.

Get the Spanish version

This edition is a pretty good overview of Frida's life with some outstanding colorful reproductions of her works. There is also a very satisfying collection of photographs, both in black and white and color, to cure the voyeur in you to see Frida as she really lived. For example, if you enlarge the back cover shot here you can see the cigarette in her left hand that she was apparently usually without. If you thought it was only the pain of her life that resulted in very few photographs of her smiling think again. The results of her heavy smoking habit produced a poor set of teeth that were blackened and not very flaterring; hence the rare smiling picture. The book has some rare photographs, including one of her laughing and her hideous teeth. The text is easy to follow and gives a whirlwind tour of Frida's life, complete with recollections by friends and other anecdotes. Included is a chronology, list of illustrations and a selected bibliography. My big complaint about this book, and it may you serve you if you are able to read Spanish, is that it is a short version of the original. I have run down a copy of the original Spanish book, "Frida: El Pincel de la Angustia" and it is highly recommended over this translated version. I cannot over state this recommendation . This version is almost like an abridged text by comparison. Case in point, the original has nearly four times as many pages! The abundance of pages is not filler either as it has many more photographs, paintings and more importantly, text. If you hunt around you can find the original at an affordable price. All in all this is a good addition, but not edition, to your library on Mexcian Art or personal Frida Kahlo book collection.

About the Author

Hirokazu Kanazawa is the most respected figure in the karate world today, and a close disciple of Gichin Funakoshi, the father of modern karate and founder of the Shotokan school. Kanazawa founded the Shotokan Karate-do International Federation in 1979, after gaining his impressive reputation in Hawaii, the U.S. mainland, and Europe as an official trainer for the Japan Karate Association. The Shotokan Karate-do International Federation now has branches in more than 90 countries throughout the world. Kanazawa is the author of Karate Fighting Techniques published by Kodansha.

An excellent basic guide to Shotokan Karate.

It is important to note that the title can be a little misleading. This book is more for beginners and intermediate Shotokan Karate students. The lessons and photos are clear and easy to understand; however, one cannot learn true Shotokan Karate without actually training under an instructor. The real value of this excellent book is that if it is used in conjunction with hands-on training under a Shotokan Karate teacher, this volume will be of great value. There are six detailed chapters in this text.

In conclusion, this is a book any Shotokan Karate student and/or teacher who wants to further understand the techniques and tactics of Shotokan Karate.

A great book from a great master

From my point of view, Mr. Kanazawa is the greatest karate master alive. I never had the chance to see him "live" on a training course, but lots of video tapes fell into my hand throughout the years. As I love books, I always wanted to read his work, so I've chosen this one to start with. It was not a surprise for me that the book is as good as its author, professionally written and illustrated, in a high quality print.

Great as an overview and training reference

Whether one can learn well enough from books to acheive "Black Belt" level knowledge and skills is very debateable, to be sure. A lot I think depends on the person, how perceptive they are, how much previous training/experience in martial arts they might of had, and so on (even black belt practitioners from a school can vary a lot in quality). Generally, I feel the best use of books like this is as a reference and aid to one who is in a class already, or to one who is looking for a good overview of Shotokan Karate. This book will serve as an authoritative depiction of what is the "kihon," or individual techniques of Shotokan (punches, kicks, blocks, etc.), along with a few kata (forms), an introduction to basic kumite (sparring), and an overview of some training techniques, etc. Thus, all by itself this book will not provide all the knowledge one needs as a "black belt" practitioner. One will also need a lot more in the way of kata and kumite. These latter two can be aquired in Kanazawas other two titles, "Karate: The Complete Kata," and "Karate Fighting Techniques." Also, it's really important to see the techniques in motion, either live (preferable) and/or in video (try Youtube) to get an accurate idea of how the techniques work dynamically. Then it's important to take all the information you have acquired and to practice, practice, practice in a very conscientious way. A teacher can be very important to give objective feedback, but whether one has a teacher or not, there is no substitute for ones own careful attention to detail and diligent practice.

I wanted to note also, that although the title says that this book is an "intensive course," one must be careful not to progress through the material too quickly. In the real world most people need to be very patient with themselves, and should not rush their training; it very important to give oneself the amount of time one needs to build a strong foundation before one progresses further. Failure to do this will result in injury and poor quality technique. Thus, one should not take this book too literally as a do-it-yourself guide to black belt in a year. Keeping this in mind, I feel that this book can be very useful as an overview and an aid in ones overall effort to acquire mastery in Karate-do; that is, if one does not rely on it exclusively.

The object of this book is to investigate the history of the great Iranian province which formed the eastern portion of the Persian Empire, and which,
after the Macedonian invasion, became an independent Greek kingdom. The valiant Greeks who ruled the country were afterwards driven over the Hindu-Kush, where they maintained themselves for nearly a century longer, finally succumbing to the tribes from the north which had originally displaced them. Thus it will be seen that the history of Bactria falls naturally into four divisions. Passing over the mass of legend which surrounds the earliest period, centred chiefly round the figure of Zarathustra Spitama, we find ourselves on more solid ground when we come to
deal with Bactria as a satrapy of the Persian Empire.
After the overthrow of Persia by Alexander we enter upon the second phase in the history of the country — its subjugation and settlement by the Macedonians.
The third period begins with the revolt of Diodotus in 250 b.c, when Bactria assumes the role of an independent Greek kingdom, extending its sway not only
over Sogdiana to the north, but over a great portion of the modern Afghanistan and the Panjab. The closing chapter of the history of the Bactrian Greeks
commences with their evacuation of the country north of the Hindu-Kush, when they made Sagala their capital, and ends with their final persession by the Kushan monarchs.

This is an old book republished and reminds me of a textbook. Writing is out of date and needs much better maps to follow. I found out what i wanted to know but be prepared that this is not a "fun read".

Over the past decade there has been renewed interest in X-ray examination of the colon despite the tremendous advances in endoscopy and imaging tech� nology. This renewed interest is evidenced by the proliferation of new books on radiology of the colon. However, previous discussions of double contrast ex� amination have concentrated primarily on the technique with too little attention to the understanding and interpretation of the radiologic images. This volume is unique in its emphasis on the basics of image formation and interpretation. It emphasizes the importance of the anteroposterior relation� ships of the colon in determining the distribution of barium and air. It also rec� ognizes the influence oflocation on the radiologic appearance of the lesion. The authors demonstrate a profound understanding of the principles of double contrast diagnosis as applied to the colon. They also have a good grasp of the gross pathologic changes underlying the radiologic images. The material is presented in a logical and analytical method which should be particularly useful to the beginner in this field. There are many helpful diagrams and the ra� diographic illustrations are of excellent quality.

About the Author
John Rutter was born in London in 1945 and studied music at Clare College, Cambridge. His compositions embrace choral, orchestral, and instrumental music, and he has edited or co-edited various choral anthologies, including four Carols for Choirs volumes with Sir David Willcocks and the Oxford Choral Classics series. From 1975 to 1979 he was Director of Music at Clare College, and in 1981 he formed his own choir, the Cambridge Singers. He now divides his time between composition and conducting and is sought after as a guest conductor for the world's leading choirs and orchestras. Born in 1919, David Willcocks began his musical career as a chorister at Westminster Abbey, later winning scholarships to Clifton College and King's College, Cambridge. Following war service, he was elected Fellow of King's College, and later became Organist of Salisbury and Worcester Cathedrals, conducting the Three Choirs Festival whilst at Worcester. Willcocks returned to King's College, Cambridge as Director of Music from 1957-1974, with the first collection of his arrangements in the Carols for Choirs series publishing in 1961. He was Director of Music at the Royal College of Music from 1974-1984, and was knighted in the Queen's Silver Jubilee Honours List in 1977. Willcocks also conducted The Bach Choir for 38 years, retiring in 1998. Sir David died in September 2015.

The masters do it again!

I had the pleasure of participating in a workshop with David Willcocks, and received this book as part of it. It was first published in 1987, but Sir David had some amusing anecdotes to share about how he and John Rutter, another name to reckon with in choral music circles, put it together.
This is what I like about it:
* These gentlemen are giants in the English choral music scene, and personify the English choral tradition in everything they do. So it's a pleasure to find that they have included many carols from other countries, as well as the English ones. It's very hard to find non-English-language carols, so this is a nice little collection.
* Their 4-part arrangements are imaginative but easy enough to sight-sing.
* It also includes a listing of church festivals other than Christmas, with the names and page numbers of carols that would be appropriate for each.
* For ease of navigation as you're singing, the verses are in Roman type while the refrains are in italics.
* For reasons that are not clear, they have chosen to include the text in the original language in some cases, but not all. The foreign language texts are immediately under the English translations, so you can sing in either language.
* At the very end of the book is the order of service for the traditional Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, with instructions on the appropriate rank of each person to read, from chorister to bishop.
If you are only going to buy one carol book, this and the Oxford Book of Carols are the best ones to consider. The Oxford has more in it, and is hugely more expensive, so I recommend this one! it'll take you several Christmasses to sing your way through it.

Lucked out! Most of your choir carols in it and David Willcocks pencil instructions

This carol book has terrific carols and some very unusual ones. They range from easy to hard so most choirs can benefit from them. It actually has an outline and readings from the Service of Lessons and Carols which could be very valuable for the music director and church leader.

My particular used copy just happened to have notes in it from David Willcocks himself. Can you imagine!!! This was just too good to be believed. I love nothing more than this service of lessons and carols, so the best is here. There are also some Easter Carols --worth the price.

Absolutely marvelous collection with wonderful descants and interesting arrangements. I have given copies to many people because I love this book so MUCH!!! If you've ever lived in England, or ever loved CDs of King's College Choir or St. John's College Choir from Cambridge, England, you will discover the arrangements in this great book!
