Absolutely fantastic!

This is an absolutely fantastic book on the fine art of French pastry! Chef Pfeiffer gives the reader all the tips and tricks necessary to turn out very fine pastries. As well, he weaves in little stories of his own life as a pastry chef that elevate this book above the basic pastry texts. The stories are the hidden gems in the book! Do not be dismayed that this book seems a little technical. The science presented is in fact very basic and easy to understand, but it is completely necessary in order to achieve consistency and to avoid mistakes. As an example, all recipes have ingredients scaled by weight. Finally, a pastry text that drives home the need for proper scaling! No more cups, teaspoons, etc. Far too many baking books still use flour measured in volume with no explanation of the exact technique, the result being unreproducible results or a failed recipe. Not so this text!

I consider myself a pastry hobbyist. I am not an expert and I do not bake every day. However, when I do bake I want consistent results. To that end I have taken a fair number of pastry classes. This book is the next best thing to taking a class from a master. And the best thing about this master is that he knows his audience, because he's taught pastry novices for years. He already knows your potential mistakes and points them out before you make them! So do yourself a favor. If you enjoy French pastries and you want to improve your technique, then buy this book! It is the only book on French pastry that you will ever need.

Cracked the code

I am a reasonably good cook, but have always been intimidated by pastry. Cookbooks are often a poor substitute or videos or personal instruction, but this one stands out in all respects. It is crystal clear and logically organized, beginning with the repetitive building blocks that lead to success in the later full recipes. The author seems to anticipate every question that one might have and distills the years of experience as a professional into guidance that an amateur can understand without "dumbing it down" or substituting shortcuts for true technique. I commend the amount of testing that must have gone into the book, for I have yet to find a flawed recipe. It is a challenging book, for it is a complex subject, but It has made me brave and at last, competent, in the pastry kitchen.

I work as a pastry chef and I have a huge library of cookbooks, from culinary texts to home baker-type books. I like this book, I like the descriptions, and the recipes. It's not a definitive collection of pastries from across France, but it does have an easy, accessible style and reliable recipes. I would not hesitate to make this book a gift for a passionate home baker or a professional pastry chef. I'm glad I have it.

Stan Tatkin, PsyD, MFT, is the author of Wired for Love and Your Brain on Love, and coauthor of Love and War in Intimate Relationships. He has a clinical practice in Southern California, teaches at Kaiser Permanente, and is assistant clinical professor at the University of California, Los Angeles. A Highly Useful Resource!!

As a couples therapist, I have long suggested Stan Tatkin’s books to my clients as an significant part of therapy and their ongoing journey as a couple. Now Stan has presented the perfect companion for those clients who have not yet paired up, are in the beginning stages of pairing up, or even those who are in relationship but want to deepen their understanding of attraction, commitment and longterm success in relationship. In this new book, Stan offers the “science” of attachment, neurobiology, arousal systems along with practical skill based exercises to guide the reader in the picking, vetting, dating and committing process. Stan’s natural ability to relate his brilliance and interpersonal self is felt on every page of this book! I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in the journey of dating.

Dr. Tatkin's Books Helped Us Create the Best Relationship!

I love all of Dr. Stan Tatkin's work and have also read Wired for Love and listened to his entire audio program, Your Brain on Love. I highly, highly recommend his books and have interviewed him on my radio show and YouTube channel 4 times now, which is probably more than anyone else in the 8 years the show has been on the air. Wired for Dating will give you a basic understanding of attachment types, helpful stories that provide some context, and exercises to give you practice and insight into your reactive patterns in dating and relationships. Dr. Tatkin's work has transformed my relationship and I have finally been able to create a "secure functioning" relationship within a "couple bubble" that gives me and my partner the secure attachment we didn't get as kids. We both feel so grateful to have discovered his material and I wish this stuff was common knowledge. Even if your childhood attachments were great and your relationships have been solid, if you're out in the world of dating, you're going to bump into people who didn't have that experience. It's helpful to know how to relate and communicate with authenticity in a way that isn't likely to trigger them. You'll learn a lot about yourself and the people you're dating.

I wish I had known Stan Tatkin's work a long time ago, and had been able to apply these tools in the early phases of relationships. The most valuable tool is understanding how to have secure functioning relationships even while dating, he even includes a description of a secure functioning break up. Understanding the basics of a secure functioning relationship and having a roadmap to go from healthy dating to healthy commitment is invaluable.

Fascinating and penetrating

Whether you are a total beginner or a black belt, this book is esential reading if you want to "know thy enemy"---that is, understand the psychological and behavioral patterns of street criminals which is often just as important as nuts-and-bolts techniques.
Speaking of which, Thompson's section on techniques is the only weak point in this book, and why I'd give it 4 not 5 stars. Closed fist punches to the head and chambered side kicks do not belong in a book that's supposedly geared for the general untrained public that just wants some basic basic self-defense ability. I would've expected open-palm strikes, elbows and knees, perhaps some basic sweeps and low leg kicks instead.
My advice is, read this book for its psychological training, and get your hand-to-hand training from a self-defense or reality-based martial arts school. (Meaning: avoid Tae Kwon Do and most schools of karate. Wing Tsun, Muay Thai, Penjak silat, Brazilian jujitsu, or any form of Mixed Martial Arts would be more useful.)

An Excellent Book on Real Self-Defense/Protection

The truth hurts, and never more so after you have read this book. Real Fighting is more than just the technqiues you learnt in the martial arts, it's about fighting for your survival. There are no Queensbury rules, and what you subconsciously thought were rules, then you're truly mistaken.
Geoff has given a vivid and real perspective on the art of self-defense which should be read by any serious martial artist. Don't be fooled that learning the martial arts for "donkeys" years will make you more prepared for the streets, because it won't. The real thing will be totally different.
This books gives an excellent all round overview of the subject of "self-protection", with real interviews from both sides of the stories (gang fights, muggings, rapes etc). The more you know, the more prepared you are for the real thing. It's not an ego trip kinda book, showing you loads of locks, holds, strikes, etc that will guarantee success... first and foremost, it is about awareness and what this entails. It also delves into the mental side of self-protection and it's aftermath. The book won't guarantee you absolute safety, but knowledge is power and this books holds some of the keys.
The only gripe I have about the book, is the editing. For a professional book, it is quite poor. There are formatting errors and spelling mistakes, etc which breaks the reader's concentration. I found this quite annoying at times. It is as though there was no proof reading before printing.
Aside from that, I highly recommend this book to those looking for serious self-protection.

Reality or Fantasy the Choice is Yours:

In all honesty I probably should rate this book 5 stars, given the uniqueness of the content, insights into the criminal mind and the brutal honesty of the author Geoff Thompson. I think of all the martial arts books I checked out of librarys, bought at stores, and magazines I read at supermarket shelves that I was usually to cheap to buy. Of all the materials I collected, read, etc, I really wish there had been a book like Dead or Alive out there for me years ago. Geoff Thompson makes it very clear that knowing hundreds of techniques doesn't create a magic wand of invinsability and that simplicity is often overlooked. Thompson also examines myths, misconceptions, and blatently stupid beliefs held my many who teach traditional martial arts. Technique teaching is only part of this book, Thompson interviews muggers, rapest, and their unfortunate victims and allows readers to understand how criminals choose their prey and how you can safely take percautions to help reduce the risk of being a vicim. Thompson also goes into explaining adrenalyn and how even the most experienced martial artists can find themselves defeated by mistaking their adrenalyn for fear. This book like any other Geoff Thompson book comes with my strong recommendation.

The writing was beautiful in an almost lyrical way

The writing was beautiful in an almost lyrical way, and the setting felt very realistic and vivid. The scope of the novel was large, but the gaps in time and perspective were handled well, and, overall, it didn't feel like the author had been off more than could be chewed. The characters were interesting as were the themes and the setting, but the plot might be a bit slow for some readers, though for me, that wasn't an issue. To be enjoyed for its language, characters, setting, and theme, but not so much for its plot.

Just an excellent book written by a brilliant storyteller. It's about parenthood, childhood and friendship.
