KABUKI theatre first arose in 17th century Japan as a bawdy, populist alternative to the traditional Noh theatre of masks, which had flourished since the 1300s. Originally staged by female performers and prostitutes, kabuki soon became an all-male preserve, with female roles in plays and dance-dramas being taken by female impersonators known as onnagata. Many early kabuki plays originated in the bunraku (“puppet”) theatre (founded in Osaka in 1684). Significant productions from this period included Hinin No Adauchi (“The Outcast’s Revenge”, 1664), a slaughter-vengeance drama; Shitenno Ochigodachi (1673), which introduced the violent aragoto acting style; Daifukucho Sankai Nagoya (1697), which featured the first-ever shibaraku scene; and Keisei Asama-ga-Dake (“The Asamagadake Courtesan”, 1698), featuring a vengeful female ghost. Other plays were quickly fashioned to cash in on sensational news stories of the day, such as double suicides or murder rampages. Among the first most notable playwrights were Chikamatsu Monzaemon, Namiki Sosuke, and Sakurada Jisuke. And the kabuki theatre was not without its real-life dramas and rivalries; it is reported that in 1704, for example, the actor Ikushima Hanroku was executed for the onstage murder of Ichikawa Danjuro I, progenitor of perhaps the most illustrious acting lineage in kabuki history.
By the first decades of the 19th century, kabuki theatre – as exemplified by the works of playwright Tsuruya Nanboku IV – was renowned for its frequent displays of torture, mutilation, swordplay and supernatural horror.
UKIYO-E, the art of woodblock design and printing, enjoyed a symbiosis with the kabuki theatre almost from its inception in the late 17th century, with a significant number of images serving as posters for stage productions. Among the notable early practitioners of such images were Kiyonobu and Kiyomasu. Kiyoshi Kobayashi is a lifelong practitioner, researcher, and teacher of judo. He lives in Chiba Prefecture, Japan. Harold Sharp has taught and written extensively on judo, for both children and adults, and is the author of Boys' Judo and, with Shinzo Takagaki, of The Techniques of Judo. he holds the rank of 7th dan and lives in Los Angeles, CA.

Good pictures and helpful pointers

The beginning and intermediate Judo student will be pleased with book. It is a good introduction to the major Judo techniques, starting with the basics such as falling and unbalancing you opponent, and then introducing a number of the more common techniques (throws, sweeps, chokes, and holds). Each technique is accompanied by a number of pictures showing the progression of the moves (including different variations) as well as good explanatory text.
There is good reason that this book has had 48 printings!

Good for those new to the Sport and Art of Judo

Shows the basic Judo moves and techniques in an east to follow format. Starting with how to fall properly to basic and intermediate throws and counter throws. I would recommend this book to people new to Judo and high school/college wrestling, due to it's simplicity and to-the-point photos and movement explainations.

This is one of the old, simple books on Judo. No frills and no extended theory. Just the real stuff done by men who know the sport. This is a great book for any Judo student to learn from and to keep as a reference. Bought a bunch of them as gifts for my Judo students.

This is a thorough book covering all aspects of fashion design. It covers the different markets within the fashion industry from designer to budget, describes the design process, gives information about a variety of textiles along with fabric photos, describes the difference between woven and knit fabrics and clothing, covers technical design and flat sketching along with examples of flats, provides over a dozen assignments/exercises that enhance creativity and aid the development of a collection, gives resume writing tips and portfolio creation suggestions along with actual portfolio examples, and it ends with interview transcripts of industry professionals. There are inspiring fashion illustration and collections throughout the book to complement the text.

This would be a great resource for those entering fashion schools to get an overview of what's ahead and after graduation for a solid review of the lessons learned in college and to prepare for the career ahead.

It is a book that you gives you inspiration and shows you how to think and plan like a fashion designer. Really Misses the Mark

My expectation is that this book would be a "reference" style book; a book where I can look up specific built-ins, functions, and the like. To be fair, the author does include a little bit towards the end, but it tries to be more of a tutorial style - not what I am looking for. Content aside, my next major objection is the font for the text. It is too small to start with, and more importantly, it is san serif, which means that a person's eyes have to work twice as hard following along a sentence. This is the third time I have been disappointed with an Apress publication, so three strikes and you're out! No more Apress books!

This book is definitely not worth buying. It's expensive and consists only of 275 pages. It is inadequate. For instance, Array.prototype.forEach is mentioned only very briefly by a short example and its parameters are not explained at all. Also, the method is even not in the index.

About the Author
Neil V. Watson and the members of his lab at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada study sex-related aspects of the structure and function of the nervous system, with ongoing grant support from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. His work on topics ranging from the effects of steroids on cell survival, to the neural control of reproductive behavior, to human cognitive sex differences has appeared in a variety of journals, including the Journal of Neuroscience, the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, and Brain Research. Dr. Watson received his undergraduate and master's degrees from the University of Western Ontario and his Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia. Following a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California, Berkeley, he joined the faculty at SFU in 1996 where he is now Professor of Neuroscience in the Department of Psychology. He teaches biological psychology to hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students each year. S. Marc Breedlove, the Barnett Rosenberg Professor of Neuroscience at Michigan State University, has written over 130 scientific articles investigating the role of hormones in shaping the developing and adult nervous system, publishing in journals including Science, Nature, Nature Neuroscience, and the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science. He is also passionate about teaching-in the classroom, and in the greater community through interviews with the Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, New York Times, and Newsweek, as well as broadcast programs such as All Things Considered, Good Morning America, and Sixty Minutes. He has active grant support from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke and the National Institute of Mental Health. Dr. Breedlove is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Association for Psychological Science.

Pretty good

Very interesting textbook. Easy to read even though the subject material is dense. It can take a while to really wrap your mind around it all. My Biopsych class in Fall I think was one of the first to use it so the website wasn't completely functional yet which kind of sucked. It lacked those extra study resources. It is cool to have a book that has such up to date information in it. Even mentions Pixar's Inside Out which just came out earlier this year.
