A trip down memory lane

This tribute to a successful, driven businessman of the late 19th to mid 20th century, is told by family members who share their first hand recollections of the man, his ideas, and his publications. We read intimate details of the life of his large family, their homes, travels, children, hobbies (sports), friends, and personal tragedies. Mr. Collier began his career in the business office of a coal mine in West Virginia and from there spawned a direct mail order campaign that transformed the way business was transacted in those times. His sales pitches and techniques became hugely popular as did his books on his "positive" thinking ideas. He would wind up working in the family publishing company which was kept alive as a thriving enterprise by family members. He was interested in health foods, exercise, and put his family first. Parts of this book are devoted to his children's memories of life with their father and mother who maintained homes in New York and Florida. This would be of interest to readers who enjoy reminiscenses of that time period. My thanks to the author and Goodreads for a complimentary copy.

Finally, Someone Wrote This!

Leave it to DK Publishing (of Eyewitness Books fame) to create something this cool! Yes, it's the one boys ages 7-13 have been waiting for: a reader-friendly book about cars.

Car Science is divided into four sections. The first is Power. My favorite spread in this section is "Making gasoline," but the part about gears is also fascinating, as is "Bugatti Veyron," about a car with 1001-brake horsepower, which means it can go from 249 mph to a stop in under 10 seconds.

Section 2 is Speed. It begins with a colorful chart comparing the speeds of different animals and vehicles, from a snail's .03 mph to the Thrust SSC's land-speed record of 763 mph. I also liked finding out how something as odd as a boxfish could give designers an idea for the shape of a car in "Inspired by Nature."

Section 3 addresses Handling. My favorite spread title here is "Wall of Death," with "Monster Trucks" and "Car-crash Science" tied for second.

Section 4, Technology, starts off by explaining what cars are made of, moving on to topics like scuba cars before ending happily with "Top 10 Crazy Ideas."

Car Science is written at about a 3rd grade level, but its appeal is much broader. The book serves as an alluring introduction to understanding how cars work. My only request is that someone now write a book explaining cars and their engines in more detail, perhaps at a 6th-8th grade level. (The next one "up" I found was for high schoolers and adults.) In the meantime, boys--and girls--should take a look at this fast, shiny sports car of a book. VROOM! VROOM!

In 1948 the United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and with it a profusion of norms, processes, and institutions to define, promote, and protect human rights. Today virtually every cause seeks to cloak itself in the righteous language of rights. But even so, this universal reliance on the rights idiom has not succeeded in creating common ground and deep agreement as to the scope, content, and philosophical bases for human rights.

Makau Mutua argues that the human rights enterprise inappropriately presents itself as a guarantor of eternal truths without which human civilization is impossible. Mutua contends that in fact the human rights corpus, though well meaning, is a Eurocentric construct for the reconstitution of non-Western societies and peoples with a set of culturally biased norms and practices.

Mutua maintains that if the human rights movement is to succeed, it must move away from Eurocentrism as a civilizing crusade and attack on non-European peoples. Only a genuine multicultural approach to human rights can make it truly universal. Indigenous, non-European traditions of Asia, Africa, the Pacific, and the Americas must be deployed to deconstruct—and to reconstruct—a universal bundle of rights that all human societies can claim as theirs.

Third World Critique of Human Rights Movement

Mutua's book is a must-have for those seeking to understand why a hegemonic, westernized approach to human rights is so problematic. Speaking from the perspective of an "insider/outsider" (the author is a leading international human rights scholar and activist from Kenya), he examines both the positive aspirations and contributions of human rights as well as evidence of its limitations and even dangers in practice.

Rather than embrace a strong version of cultural relativism, Mutua clearly condemns violations of human rights in both North and South. Nevertheless, he demands that human rights leaders must spend time in self-examination with regard to the history, origins, and contemporary contexts in which violations occur if abuses are to be effectively combatted.

There is much here for debate and discussion both inside classrooms and among activists in the field. Along with works by Anghie, Gathii, Rajagopal, Woods & Lewis, Andrews, Knop, Wing, and others, Mutua's book is a foundational contribution to the loose network known as the "Third World Approaches to International Law" (TWAIL) movement.

This book is very interesting, especially for comparison to western ideology as the author is of African origin. The book offered me a very interesting perspective on the subject of human rights from a totally different mindset than my own. Overall, a very solid book and I definitely recommend it.

Joshua S. Goldstein is Professor Emeritus of International Relations at American University, Nonresident Sadat Senior Fellow at the University of Maryland's CIDCM, and Research Scholar in the Department of Political Science at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He is the recipient of the International Studies Association's 2001-2010 Best Book of the Decade Award for War and Gender (Cambridge University Press, 2001).

Jon C. Pevehouse is Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He is the recipient of the International Studies Association's 2009 Karl Deutsch Award.

Great Introductory Text

This is probably the best International Relations (IR) text out there, and it is a good one too! IR is a hybrid and consequently very large field comprised of myriad sub-fields intersecting at various angles. This book makes sense of this confusion, and does so in an intellectually rigorous fashion.
The book is divided into two parts: International Security and International Political Economy. The chapters in these parts introduce the reader to such concepts as power politics, international law, trade, the environment, and the North-South Gap, to name a few.
It is a difficult task to sum up the entire field of IR, and Goldstein does not do this. I'm not sure it can be done. But what Goldstein does do is provide the introductory student with a solid grasp of the fundamentals of IR so that s/he can have a solid foundation from which to launch further inquiries.

Too Expensive

As a prof, I used this book in my intro IR course for many years. After not teaching the course for four years, I went to order it for this Fall, and found it cost 120 bucks. I just can't bring myself to do this to the students. The book is excellent, but not worth the price. I will not be assigning it.

WAY too expensive

I've TA'd for this class for 2 years now, and the publishers have just spiked the price. There's no reason that this 150-page book should cost more than $30. This is exploitation, pure and simple. Professors please do not assign this book.

Update: When I took this class, I paid $5 for a used copy of the 5th edition. Now you can get older editions for $0.01. As long as you're comfortable with a little insecurity, I'd almost recommend buying an older edition and saving yourself $100. They're virtually the same thing, just without a picture of Psy on the front.
