This book is a clear, rigorous, and scientifically informed inquiry into some key questions in the philosophy of time—e.g. 'Do things robustly change?' and 'What would the world have to be like for time to pass?' The heart of the book is Skow's treatment of the moving spotlight theory (MST), which comes in three forms: MST-time, MST-supertime, and MST-supertense. The discussion of MST-supertense is tough but rewarding, and I thought the arguments against MST-supertime were deep and interesting.

Another virtue of the book is that it's pretty readable even to newcomers. Just skip some of the parts on relativity (and supertense).

Amazing gift, tons of things you can do with this!

This is a really fun book to read, a typical Dr Seuss treasure. I purchased this book for my daughters first birthday party and had all of the guests write well wishes and notes for her to read as she got older. Now when she reads the book she has these lovely messages to remind her of how much she's loved and it made her first birthday that much more special!

Very disappointed

If I had known this was a Llewellyn publication, I would have been more hesitant about buying it. Like so many of their books, this was like dipping a toe into water, but not being able to get completely wet because a lot of substance wasn't there. For example, I'd like to know why five is the number of life and of birth. This little factoid went totally unexplained. There is more, but I'll leave it at that. Also, he has the the direction of energy flowing in exactly the opposite direction of what I was taught, which was that the energy is in the stones and flows through the focus stone into the universe to be manifested. The focus stone is usually six sided, with a point at one end and a flat base at the other, and is usually the same type of crystal as those in the grid, although quartz always works. Needless to say, I found the book very disappointing.

Punny very Punny

Punny very punny, as I have come to expect from Piers Anthony, in the Xanth series of books. I had read the first 2 books right after they were published. There weren't that many in the series then. I will be getting the rest of the series as I can. Just because they are written by him. I will also look into some of his other books as well.
To anyone who has a love of word play you will enjoy the Xanth series, although I had to look up some words to fully get the pun, and I thought that I was well read.
Silly me.

Xanth always an interesting read

I read this series years ago. I'm one who likes to read books over and over, so I ordered the first three books of the series for my KIndle. Piers Anthony is quite a writer. In the "Xanth" series, he is the king of "pun". This particular book of the series centers on Bink's son, Dor. Dor is beginning to grow up and needs a "mission". So between King Trent and Magician Murphy, they come up with the idea to send Dor into a tapestry hanging in Castle Roogna to find out the history of the castle. Inadvertantly, a spider happens to be in the wrong place at the right time, and it ends up as Dor's companion in a more "primative" time of Xanth. It is a fun read, with lots of interesting experiences for the immature Dor. I really liked this episode. We get an opportunity to meet several characters that we have met in earlier books of the series. I won't give any more away. This is a fun book to read, gives lots of history, and insight into the personalities of familiar characters. It is also fun to see Dor's responses to the realization that he needs to mature a bit more to experience aspects of adulthood. That sounds cryptic, I know; read the book and you'll understand what I mean.

I've read all of Piers Anthony's books and love them. I bought this book to read to my 6th grade students. I love the puns and the play on words that my students need to be exposed to this kind of word play. The only problem is the book is geared more for high school kids and has some mild sexual references where the male characters react like teenagers to meeting attractive women. I skip these parts.

Meandering at best

There are plenty of jewels in this book - the jewels of Lean Six Sigma! But if you are new to the concepts, or if you are curious about how they might apply in the greater constellation of health care, should you look elsewhere? I don't know, all I can say is that this book is so arranged that even the most attentive reader will find him or herself flipping back and forth between charts and the far off text that describes them, will find the authors contradicting themselves, or flippantly dismissing what might be important concepts by saying "this isn't a book on XXX" and then continuing, and with presenting everything in LSS as if it was of equal importance. But it is not.

Now, having said the above, and here warning you not to read this tome while driving, or operating heavy machinery, there is a great breadth of material covered in this book. Because of its exhaustiveness, I give it a 3 star rating, and not lower. In particular, chapter 3 on team building was well thought out. Chapter 4 on project management was inoffensive, but 5, which purports to provide the readers with TPI, (Total Practice Improvement) is fairly deadly, and 6, where these techniques are supposedly deployed in a case study (more than one, in fact) practically sinks the boat. The problem is not only with the turgidity of text. I cannot believe that these authors paid any attention to their customer's state of mind, interest, or understanding (surprising fact that they would not) while composing this. Rather, they plowed right ahead, willynilly. The best way this book could be read would be in a group setting, so that the various statements made without either attribution, clear precedent, or consequent could be understood.

Now you are forewarned. Again, there are wise statements in this book, the authors clearly have plenty of experience at their craft. But not at writing a textbook, nor writing well. A pity.

Excellent presentation of refined, sophisticated and professional data.

I was really anticipating this book. Noir techniques are fantastic for psychological thrillers, one of which I am writing for a comic of my own design for my Lone Comic entertainment brand.

When it arrived, the information was so complete and useful, it was almost over my head. Even though the information is presented in just about as intelligent a manner as it can be presented, it is some professional level data for accomplished comic book artists.

That is not to say a beginner cannot use it a reuse it as their skill grows - it was just a big, complete, comprehensive bunch of data on the topic.

I really hope I can use all this book offers in the long run.

Noir realistic comics by one of the greatest

Being a Belgian-style comic illustrator, I did'nt know Shawn Martinbrough before, so I visited his homepage and made an exploration of the book with the appropriate functions of Amazon. Then not only I was convinced that Martinbrough had been choiced by the most important comic publishers, and his incredible talent was evident, but also that the book was of first interest for any comics illustrator working with ink outlines and having to illustrate dramas and place plain dark zones. Martinbrough warns the reader that he will not teach drawing either figures or environments, nevertheless he gives great ideas of how get the most of many situations through numerous well-explained comic pages. This is not a book to read as a simple novel, but to study carefully and read several times before, during and after practice. Martinbrough works only traditionaly (I do all my inking digital in Photoshop and in Manga Studio EX), but no problem: this manual keeps all its interest for digital illustrators. As a bonus, a very beautiful comic novel "The Truce" is included in the book. With the excellent "Drawing crime noir" by Christopher Hart, this handbook makes not only a good pair for professionals, but it is simply a MUST TO BUY, even for advanced illustrators when they are not sure how to place their plain ink zones.

Simple words, rich imagery

This is a surprisingly 'complete' contribution to the growing number of books on how-to create graphic novels. The text is sparing but to the point while the images speak volumes about why and how the images were created for the storytelling task. This is not a step by step about the business of graphic novels or comics but is more of a distilled rendering of Martinbrough's accumulated wisdom about what works in this approach to visual storytelling. I do believe that the reader is more likely to pick up these pointers if the reader has a background in art already. In other words, there is much in the visual aspects of this book to be appreciated if you have tried your hand at visual storytelling already. An excellent reference book for those that are trying their hand at graphic novels.

Algo bueno, algo malo, algo feo

El libro pretende ser un estudio de los comienzos del cristianismo; el autor reescribe con sus propias palabras y seg�n su interpretaci�n, algunos de los evangelios, los Actos de los Ap�stoles y las cartas de San Pablo. Pero lo hace selectivamente, resaltando lo que le gusta y denigrando de lo que no. Obviamente de modo arbitrario. Es la reflexi�n personal de un individuo que pas� de agn�stico a fiel creyente y de nuevo a agn�stico. En este proceso ha reflexionado sobre los or�genes del cristianismo. Por estos motivos, el libro no es para nada un an�lisis cr�tico del cristianismo, pero el leerlo estimula a buscar la verdad estudiando otros libros m�s serios y releyendo el nuevo testamento.

El libro contiene cosas buenas, malas y feas.

De bueno: Es un libro interesante y con sus cr�ticas al cristianismo nos hace reflexionar. El autor ha estudiado en detalle el nuevo testamento, ha pensado a fondo sobre el per�odo y la interpretaci�n de los evangelios, aunque cuando parece que lo ha hecho solo, sin debate con otras personas o expertos, como hablando consigo mismo. Nos muestra que nuestro cristianismo es “Paulino”, en contraste con la posici�n tradicional de la Iglesia que nos presenta el cristianismo como un bloque monol�tico, donde todos estaban de acuerdo y proveniente de las ense�anzas de Jes�s. Es Pablo el que cre� el cristianismo a su medida.

El libro ha recibido premios (Lire, Le Point, Le Monde). Pero, �por qu� los ha recibido? No lo s�. Pero al leerlo he constado que el autor especula sin pruebas. Es libro est� bien escrito, mantiene el inter�s, se lee bien, pero es malo como historia, es malo como memoria personal, malo como novela.

De feo tiene mucho. Solo algunos ejemplos. El escritor usa palabras groseras donde no es necesario. Dice que la Virgen Maria a lo mejor disfrutaba del sexo, que a lo mejor comet�a actos impuros. �A qu� viene esta especulaci�n? �Qu� tiene esto que ver con los or�genes del cristianismo o con la verdad hist�rica del nuevo testamento? Si quiere explicar que la Virgen Mar�a era una persona normal, hay muchas otras maneras de decirlo sin ser tan grosero………. y ofensivo. �Se puede tomar el libro en serio despu�s de leer esto?

Para explicar c�mo hace para distinguir lo que considera verdadero en los evangelios de lo que considera fantas�a el autor utiliza una descripci�n detallada de un video pornogr�fico que le gusta mucho mirar donde le parece que el placer es fingido en contraste con lo que sucede en la realidad. Carrere es capaz de percibir esta diferencia y de all� que es capaz de percibir la diferencia entre lo real y lo ficticio los evangelios (�!). Podr�a haber usado mejores maneras de explicar su arbitrariedad para calificar partes de los evangelios como fantas�a, como invento de sus autores. Poco serio.

Dedica cap�tulos a describir su b�squeda de una babysitter en Paris y a describir el proceso que sigui� para escribir un libro sobre la vida de Philip K. Dick, un drogadicto estadounidense que escrib�a fantas�as y ciencia �Qu� tiene que ver todo esto con los or�genes del cristianismo?

Y de malo tambi�n tiene mucho. El autor le toma el pelo a sus lectores. Debe pensar que todos somos ingenuos, que no tenemos esp�ritu cr�tico. Especulaci�n tras especulaci�n. Dice: “……..Yo pienso que Lucas debi� haber pensado que …..” “Me imagino que Lucas habr�a preferido escribir ….. pero pensando que no deb�a de hacerlo ha escrito ….…” Parece que sabe lo que pensaba o deb�as pensar Lucas. Comienza sus argumentos diciendo “Podr�a ser que ………pero aunque no lo puedo probar es posible….”, para despu�s afirmar “Como demostramos anteriormente…” y a partir de ese momento su especulaci�n se convierte en un hecho. Carrere usa el mismo argumento, primero especula y despu�s lo da como un hecho probado, porque es lo que piensa, sin haber demostrado nada. El autor afirma sobre Lucas “….Y si alguna cosa no le gusta, lo cambia sin pens�rselo dos veces” �C�mo sabe lo que le gusta o no le gusta a Lucas? �C�mo sabe Carrere lo que es verdad o lo que es invento? �Someti�ndolo a la prueba de la veracidad del video pornogr�fico? No es serio.

�Recomiendo el libro? Si, los estimular� a querer saber m�s. Pero hay que leerlo con esp�ritu cr�tico, como si se leyese la opini�n personal de alguien, opini�n frecuentemente fantasiosa y no como si el libro contuviera la �ltima palabra. Disappointing, could have been a great book.

To really enjoy this book you have to be a serious studious of the Bible or a personal friend of the author. Some references and situations described by Emmanuel Carrere are very detailed and his assumptions are based on his believes, not necessarily on documented facts. As for the introduction is way too long and is more related to his personal life and experiences. More than once he gets lost in personal issues that are not relevant to the main topic. I flipped many pages so I could finish the book and go on to my next read.

About the Author
Donald Goldsmith was the science editor and co-writer of the PBS television series The Astronomers and the co-writer of NOVA's Is Anybody Out There? with Lily Tomlin. He has written and edited 15 books on astronomy, including The Runaway Universe, Worlds Unnumbered, Supernova!, and The Hunt for Life on Mars. Donald Goldsmith received his Ph.D. in astronomy from the University of California, Berkeley, and has taught astronomy courses there and at other institutions, including Stanford University, Cornell University, and the University of California at Santa Cruz. He has received the lifetime achievement award in popularizing astronomy from the American Astronomical Society, the science writing award from the American Institute of Physics, and the Dorothea Klumpke-Roberts award for increasing public awareness of astronomy from the Astronomical Society of the Pacific. Tobias Owen ranks among the world's leading experts on the solar system. He was awarded the NASA Medal for Exceptional Scientific Achievement for his work on the Martian atmosphere with the Viking Landers in 1976 and led the group of Voyager scientists who discovered the rings of Jupiter in 1979. He is currently a member of scientific teams on the Galileo, Nozomi, CONTOUR, DS-1 and Cassini-Huygens missions. With David Morrison, he co-authored a college text, The Planetary System, and has written over 250 scientific and popular articles. He is professor of astronomy at the University of Hawaii where he studies planets, satellites, and comets with the giant telescopes on Mauna Kea.

This book is used as a text by the University of North Dakota Space Studies program where I was exposed to its content. It is an excellent book filled with the recent nuggets of information about the search for life in the universe. It is an excellent guide to understanding the cosmos in galatic and down-to-Earth terms. This book can be read for pure pleasure as well as for general knowledge of astrobilogy and astronomy.

Excellent Overview

The new edition of this book still is by far the most comprehensive introduction to Bioastronomy, touching almost every branch of science along the exciting path it follows. Remaining firmly grounded in science it shows that reality is so fantastic that it is in no way necessary to fantasize up facts and fictions. Science still is one of the greatest adventures of mankind, and the search for life in space is one of its most stimulating branches. It also is a good motivation for young college students from other subjects to further their knowledge in science - which is necessary because we live in a science dominated world.

Great for people interested in SETI ...

The book deals with everything from the formation of stars and planets, to how life formed, to even the best ways to search for life and the odds of life being on other planets. It goes step by step, is easy to understand and even has review questions at the end of each chapter (along with a summary). Lots of photos, some in color, along with figures and tables to help explain and give more details. Great for people who want to understand the reasons people are searching for life on other planets, but also great for just understand the science of life on our planet too. All that and humor too.
