When the Maya kings of Tikal dedicated their first carved monuments in the third century A.D., inaugurating the Classic period of Maya history that lasted for six centuries and saw the rise of such famous cities as Palenque, Copan and Yaxchilan, Maya civilization was already nearly a millennium old. The reality of this Preclassic Maya civilization has been documented by scholars over the past three decades: what had been seen as an age of simple village farming, belatedly responding to the stimulus of more advanced peoples in highland Mesoamerica, is now know to have been the period when the Maya made themselves into one of the New World's most innovative societies. This book discusses the most recent advances in our knowledge of the Preclassic Maya and the emergence of their rainforest civilization, with new data on settlement, political organization, architecture, iconography and epigraphy supporting a contemporary theoretical perspective that challenges prior assumptions.

About the Author
Francisco Estrada-Belli is currently Visiting Assistant Professor of Archaeology at Boston University, USA. He is also member of the Facultad de Humanidades, Universidad San Carlos, Guatemala, and Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London. For the last ten years he has directed the Holmul Archaeological Project in the Peten district of northeastern Guatemala (bu.edu/holmul/). In February 2010 he co-founded the Maya Archaeological Initiative (mayaarchaeology.org), a not-for-profit organization that supports archaelogical research, preservation and education in Guatemala.

Fascinating take on early Maya culture

Dr. Estrada-Belli posits development of Maya art, iconography and other cutural keystones far earlier than other archaeologists had thought, and his findings of ancient artifact in the Guatemala jungle seem to bear him out. The book is lucid and well written, beginning with an overview of the major Classic sites and then working backward to the pre-Classic finds at sites such as Mirador, Holmul and Cival that seem to have pre-saged them, including development of sophisticated art, iconography and ritual. Highly readable for anyone interested in pre-Columbian history.

Well written overview of recent thinking about the beginnings of Mayan civilization and its interrelationship with other Mesoamerican areas. Lots of references if your want to follow up on any of the ideas.

Lo que hace Estrada Belli en este libro es volcarse en un per�odo muy complicado, el del origen y consolidaci�n de la civilizaci�n maya. Y lo hace con solvencia y manejando adecuadamente la informaci�n disponible en el momento actual. El aspecto tratado es el de la organizaci�n y la expresi�n del poder, y los rituales que lo acompa�an. Esperemos que este sea el primero de una serie de estudios igualmente valiosos sobre el tiempo (500 a.C. a 300 d.C.) en que se constituye la m�s importante civilizaci�n mesoamericana, es absolutamente necesario si queremos entender lo que ocurre a continuaci�n.
