This is the first book-length critical analysis in any language of Hans Blumenberg’s theory of myth. Blumenberg can be regarded as the most important German theorist of myth of the second half of the twentieth century, and his Work on Myth (1979) has resonated across disciplines ranging from literary theory, via philosophy, religious studies and anthropology, to the history and philosophy of science.

Nicholls introduces Anglophone readers to Blumenberg’s biography and to his philosophical contexts. He elucidates Blumenberg’s theory of myth by relating it to three important developments in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century German philosophy (hermeneutics, phenomenology and philosophical anthropology), while also comparing Blumenberg’s ideas with those of other prominent theorists of myth such as Vico, Hume, Schelling, Max M�ller, Frazer, Sorel, Freud, Cassirer, Heidegger, Horkheimer and Adorno. According to Nicholls, Blumenberg’s theory of myth can only be understood in relation to the ‘human sciences,’ since it emerges from a speculative hypothesis concerning the emergence of the earliest human beings. For Blumenberg, myth was originally a cultural adaptation that constituted the human attempt to deal with anxieties concerning the threatening forces of nature by anthropomorphizing those forces into mythic images.

In the final two chapters, Blumenberg’s theory of myth is placed within the post-war political context of West Germany. Through a consideration of Blumenberg’s exchanges with Carl Schmitt, as well as by analysing unpublished correspondence and parts of the original Work of Myth manuscript that Blumenberg held back from publication, Nicholls shows that Blumenberg’s theory of myth also amounted to a reckoning with the legacy of National Socialism.

About the Author

Angus Nicholls is Chair of the Department of Comparative Literature at Queen Mary University of London, UK, where he teaches German and Comparative Literature. His previous books include Goethe’s Concept of the Daemonic (2006) and Thinking the Unconscious (co-edited with Martin Liebscher, 2010). He is co-editor of History of the Human Sciences and of the Publications of the English Goethe Society.

I didn't realize part 2 of 3 Suspicions was a novel. Still, it's a good story about the sister, Ava McQuire of the Battling McQuire Boys. Her life since the tragedy of her parents has just been in shambles and she is making a stand to reclaim her life and her one true love. I wish it had been one book but, I am looking forward to part 3 's release this September 2016 .

About the Author
K. P. Stoller, MD, completed his training at the University of California at Los Angeles School of Medicine in 1986 and was a practicing board certified-pediatrician for over two decades, focusing on brain-injured children and adults. Dr. Stoller’s area of expertise is functional medicine, also known as integrative medicine. He is chief of hyperbaric medicine at the Hyperbaric Oxygen Clinic of San Francisco and editor of Medical Gas Research. He has published numerous articles on using hyperbaric oxygen to treat brain injuries. He lives in the San Francisco Bay area.

KP Stoller is a hero....

Dr. Stoller is an extraordinary practitioner outside the twisted realm of "Doc-In-The-Box" (to quote KP) medicine. He is a Lyme Guru who successfully treated me for this devastating disease. I learned much of what's in this great book during many informative visits, but there's so much more! I sincerely hope that the general public will rise up against the misguided medical cabal and demand wholesale change to our system of diagnosis and treatment. I hope too that the many conspirators will be held accountable for their lies and greed. People are suffering and dying as a result of the inactions of the AMA, Big Pharma, insurance companies, the CDC and so many other self interested profit mongers. I'm in for the fight. Bravo KP Stoller for this exceptional expose.

Cover-ups revealed

Whistleblowers are good, but DR. STOLLER SOUNDS THE TRUMPETS.
Compassion and intelligence pervade this book.

A couple of years into Dr. Stoller's treatment protocols for complications of Lyme Disease, I'm 75% well (after being sick more than ten years). Dr. Stoller relates many of his GEM PROTOCOLS in this book, and they are reason enough to buy it.

But Dr. Stoller offers far more than treatment advice in this book. For stronger folks, buy this book to learn what we must do to save ourselves and especially our yet-to-be-born CHILDREN from worsening plagues, including autism and dementias, due to COMBINATIONS of glossed-over pollutants, ignored infections, contaminated vaccines, and more.

Think DDT was banned in 1972? Read the book. (If DDT were the color red, would it be safer tinted pink?)

Penzler Pick, April 2000: It is sometimes easy to trace a literary genre to its source, and James M. Cain's first novel, The Postman Always Rings Twice, is the noir novel that paved the way for all the noir fiction that followed. The famous film starring Lana Turner and John Garfield is notoriously dark, but the novel is even more full of despair and devoid of hope. It is a short book--little more than a novella--but its searing characterization and depiction of tawdry greed and lust is branded into every reader's memory.

Frank Chambers, a drifter, is dropped from the back of a truck at a rundown rural diner. When he spots Cora, the owner's wife, he instantly decides to stay. The sexy young woman, married to Nick, a violent and thuggish boor, is equally attracted to the younger man and sees him as her way out of her hopeless, boring life. They begin a clandestine affair and plot to kill Nick, beginning their own journey toward destruction.

Horace McCoy, David Goodis, Jim Thompson, and the other notable noir writers never achieved Cain's spare brilliance. Virtually all of his major works have been filmed, though several Hollywood studios refused to make the films, directors refused to be involved, and actors turned down roles because of their repugnance at the lack of morality inherent in all Cain's characters. Reading him may not be fit for a Sunday school class, but once you begin you will be unable to resist continuing, like picking at a painful scab or watching a tarantula inside a glass dome. --Otto Penzler

A LUCKLESS DRIFTER, AN AMORAL WIFE, A RECKLESS MURDER

Poolroom hustler, con artist, auto mechanic, bum--Frank Chambers, after being thrown off a hay truck he'd stowed away on the night before, wanders into the Twin Oaks Tavern and talks the owner into a giving him a free lunch. Then the owner offers him a job fixing cars. Frank hesitates. Then he sees the owner's wife. Frank takes the job.

Thus begins this tawdry tale of desperation, lust and lies. Published in 1934 and banned in Boston for its violence and eroticism, "The Postman Always Rings Twice" is like back alley fisticuffs--it ain't pretty, but it works.

"I sunk my teeth into her lips so deep I could feel the blood spurt into my mouth. It was running down her neck when I carried her upstairs."

No, this isn't "Romeo and Juliet." It's two careless people who somehow fall in love in spite of each other and then convince themselves they can get away with murder.

The results are less than spectacular.

This story is bare-knuckled, unflinchingly masculine, and briskly told in 116 pages. Frank Chambers himself narrates, peppering the narrative with 1930s colloquialisms and a drifter's outlook.

It's as American as a motorcycle cop on a California highway.

I should also state for the record, both movie versions of this book were terribly miscast.

As intense and exciting as any crime novel I've read

Despite only taking a few hours to complete, this was as intense and exciting as any crime novel I've read. James M. Cain manages to squeeze a whole novel's worth of characters, plot twists, and emotions into only 116 pages. Like Ernest Hemingway, Cain employs a minimalistic writing style to fashion uneducated, "simple" characters with complex emotional undercurrents. He knows when to understate a scene and when to use vivid, erotic images to shock his readers. His pacing is nearly flawless, except for one awkward scene with the briefly-mentioned Madge Allen character. And the conclusion, while somewhat of a cliche, is typical of the best 1930's roman noir fiction.
The only reason I gave this book 3 stars instead of 4 is that I wish Cain had added more dialogue and development scenes at the beginning to show how Frank and Cora fell in love and fed off each other's neuroses.
