You see every twist and turn coming from a mile away

Grace, a voluptuous beauty with a Ph.D., is overextended from caring for her mother and working long hours at a museum. She decides to visit her friend Julia in Italy to relax. Grace hasn't found relationships to be particularly thrilling, so she doesn't understand all the fuss when she arrives to find Julia trying to trap her latest conquest into marriage. All of that changes when handsome Matteo shows up at the apartment. He instantly recognizes the sparks between them but Grace refuses to betray her friend by dating him--especially after Julia informs her that she's carrying his child. What's worse, because Matteo is rich Julia has no intention of telling him about the baby until it's too late to end the pregnancy, thinking it will force him into marriage. Grace promises to keep the secret but is drawn to Matteo and eventually reveals her feelings to him. However, she still refuses to believe him when he says that he has has been trying for months to convince Julia that what was really only a casual affair is over. When the women are invited to Matteo's family estate, things boil over. Matteo's love for Grace is so apparent that Julia finally plays her trump card and reveals her pregnancy to a horrified Matteo. Grace knows this is the end for them and quietly slips out of Italy. Matteo soon tracks her down at her apartment, but only to apologize and confirm that he's marrying Julia. Grace returns to work and is devastated when Julia turns up at the museum to show off her expensive ring. Will Matteo follow through on his marriage plans or will he listen to his heart? The answer is, of course, predictable but unfortunately so is the reason. Julia was such an obviously selfish, manipulative person that I couldn't understand why Grace was so devoted to her. Plus, it was uncomfortable to have Grace jump into a relationship with a man who had just jumped out of bed with her close friend. This book just didn't feel right.

The Baby Gambit Slows to a Halt...

The Baby Gambit seems an interesting enough book however it loses steam in the first chapter. The wonderfully beautifully Grace with a doctorate in art history can't even recognize her own beauty much less the fact that her best friend Julia is a gold-digger.
Matteo di Falco is presented as the ultimate Italian hunk. He is suave, sophisticated and wealthy. So why does he allow himself to be maniputlated by Grace's best friend?
The story lacks realism. Grace chooses not to involve herself with her friend's lover especially when she believes Julia is pregnant with Matteo's child. Matteo di Falco allows himself to be manipulated by a woman who is both shallow and selfish. Matteo is too weak to be considered an acceptable hero especially since he is determined to have a relationship with Grace without adequately explaining the relationship he has with Julia. The story rambles and slowly drags the reader to the end.

Meh! Didn't leave me with that warm fuzzy feeling...

This is one of those romance novels that reminds me of why I usually avoid romance novels and instead read meatier fare. Grace is just too self-obsessed with her good looks being a detriment to her own happiness, while Matteo's intense attraction to her while still entangled with her friend is implausible. Matteo knew Julia had a thing for him (gold digger or not) and should not have been using her as a vehicle to get to know Grace better, and Grace should have had more backbone. With his immense wealth, he should have extricated himself from the friend, given it a brief period of time, and then manufactured a bunch of excuses to go visit her museum or buy artwork for it or something to woo her once he was 'clear' of the gold digging girlfriend. A waste of my time.
